Toxic friendships in K-dramas

K-dramas, no matter how romantic and feel-good, have also portrayed some really toxic tropes amongst friends that really made us rethink who we really want around us!

A major reason why K-dramas are popular today is because of its romantic stories and for the most part these shows are extremely adorable and instantly give us that escape from reality. However, quite a few times in these shows, there are friendship arcs that completely miss the mark. A true K-drama fan would know that the sign of a good K-drama is not just the chemistry between the leads but also the other subplots with the supporting characters and how all of it is beautifully wrapped up together at the end. But when that’s not the case and everyone’s back stabbing each other or just rather self absorbed is when it leaves us shook to see something like that in a K-drama. The Glory and Hierarchy are of course obvious examples of toxic friendships that we’ve seen but some subtle ones also make it to the list of what’s cool and what’s not okay to do when you’re friends with someone. Simply because at the end of the day, it's 2024 and it's an era where we don’t forget our friends when we fall in love!

Here are some friendships that reeked of toxicity from start to finish!

Su-Min and Kang Ji-Won - Marry My Husband

If there was a school for toxic friends, Su-Min would be the principal of it. Not once has she been a true friend to Kang Ji-Won. Under the false pretense of being her friend, Su-Min literally stripped away every good opportunity from Kang Ji-Won’s life. She was insecure to the point that she wanted every single thing that Ji-Won had which literally included her husband too!

The entire cast of Hierarchy

The show’s ‘all’s well that ends well’ climax leaves you confused about how can a bunch of friends who have constantly lied, cheated and plotted for each other’s downfall, suddenly have each other’s back by the end of it!

Pyo Mi-Seon and Yoon Hye-Jin - Hometown Cha Cha Cha

It’s one thing to realize that you love someone but it is entirely another to leave your friend stranded in the middle of nowhere during heavy rains just so you can propose to a guy. Friends who forget friends when they fall in love always make it to the toxic list.

Yoon Song-Ah and Kim Ga-Young - She Would Never Know

Quite similar to the Hometown Cha Cha Cha’s arc, Yoon Song-Ah and Kim Ga-Young’s friendship too focused only on Song-Ah’s story. Ga-Young was always solving her issues and catering to her mood swings, trying to make her feel okay. Not to forget how she also adjusted to her living situation since they were roommates and Yoon Song-Ah just overnight decided to shift abroad and come back without notice as well.

The gang of bullies in The Glory

There was an entire group of bullies in the show who went after Moon Dong-Eun but none of them had any sort of attachment towards each other either. It was like watching a competition of who can be the most evil and they were always ready to pull the trigger on each other. It was super stressful not only for the characters in the show but literally for us to watch as an audience as well!
