All of us have binged on a plethora of K-dramas surrounding heterosexual love stories but how many of us really know how a queer K-drama unfolds? Here’s 5 noteworthy ones to get started with!
The world is head over heels for Korean culture now more than ever! With K-dramas and K-pop taking over our lives in the best way possible, we see ourselves more and more drawn towards this culture for all its beautiful things! But while the culture glorifies art, it is also conservative in certain aspects. The LGBTQIA+ community falls under one of those conservative categories. Korea does not encourage being vocal about your sexuality and hence that reflects in its cinema too. It is as taboo as it can get. So to make a gay love story in a society where it is not even spoken about is a bold move to say the least! Over the recent few years, there has been a slight shift in narrative and LGBTQIA+ stories have started to see the light of the day.
With Nevertheless in 2021 having a lesbian love story sub plot and BL K-dramas like Love in the Big City stirring conversations, it encouraged more filmmakers to tell queer stories. While these K-dramas are often boycotted online with their videos being taken down from Youtube and spreading hate for the cast on social media or not actively promoting it anywhere, we’re still seeing an increase in queer K-dramas than what it was a few years back. They don’t get the prime time slot on television and mostly have to release these dramas on apps like Viki, it still feels like a step in the right direction!
