K-drama love triangles

K-drama love triangles are literally one of the most major parts of the show and here’s to the ones who showed us that it doesn’t have to be all that complicated!

In every successful K-drama, there are certain essential elements that remain constant. It’s the reason why we keep going back to K-dramas in the first place. One of them is a good love triangle drama. The ‘second lead’ as a concept was introduced to us when we got into the world of K-dramas and the central conflict of the story is built around it. Because here’s the thing about second leads - they’re so good, we love them just as much as the first lead sometimes. You feel so torn and eagerly anticipate to see who will actually end up with whom. The love triangle basically just adds a level of suspense and drama until the very end.

While this is fun and dramatic to watch, sometimes the makers take it a bit too far with these love triangles. There’s planning, plotting and a lot of other toxic hurdles that the second lead creates just out of sheer jealousy. So in a swarm of problematic love triangles, the ones that aren’t like that simply feel like a much needed reminder that while rejections are hard, things don’t have to turn so sour between people!

These love triangles are so loved in pop culture simply because of how wholesome they are!

Hong Du-Sik, Yoon Hye-Jin and Seong- Hyeon - Hometown Cha Cha Cha

Seong-Hyeon was the second lead here who was in love with Yoon Hye-Jin since their college days. But by the time he finally gathered courage to confess his love to her, she was already head over heels in love with Hong Du-Sik. But the beautiful part is that Seong-Hyeon never turned bitter towards her or Chief Hong. Even with a broken heart, he happily gave his blessings to the couple and still stayed friends with both of them. Chief Hong and Hye-Jin also made sure Seong-Hyeon is doing well in life and it just showed that as real adults, they take rejection with grace without making things awkward and losing the equation they share.

Kang Hu- Yeon, Lee Hong-Ju and Kim Hye-Ji - Serendipity’s Embrace

Kang Hu-Yeon was Kim Hye-Ji's first love. He was all she knew. She has been pursuing him since high school but when she learns that he actually is in love with her best friend, without feeling envious of her, she instead clears his path and tells him to go confess his love to her. She ultimately became their biggest cheerleader which was rather heartwarming to watch.

serendipity

Yeon-Soo, Choi-Woong and Kim Ji-Woong - Our Beloved Summer

If heartbreak had a face- Kim Ji-Woong would be it. He wasn’t the type to make grand gestures or give a long speech to confess his love. He was more the silent type who just secretly loved Yeon-Soo until one day he just could not contain it all in. When he learns that Choi-Woong and Yeon-Soo are still in love with each other, he tells her about his feelings in his own way. Of course he got his heartbroken but that never stopped him from making the most romantic documentary on his friends.

Ryu Sun-Jae, Im-Sol and Kim Tae-Song - Lovely Runner

This was one K-drama where the first leads were so in love, that the second male lead just never stood a chance. Nevertheless Kim Tae-Song helped Im-Sol in more ways than one. In fact, he played a rather pivotal role in giving Sun-Jae and Sol the happy ending that they deserved. His relationship with Sun-Jae was also one of healthy competition and a love/hate equation where they just pull each other’s leg.

Kang Bo-Geol, Kang Woo-Hak and Seo Mok-Ha - Castaway Diva

Seo Mok-Ha has been in love with Ki-Ho all her life. So after being rescued from the stranded island, it was a given that she would look for him. For the longest time she thought Woo-Hak is in fact Ki-Ho because of how similar they looked. But things take a turn when she finds out, much to her surprise, that Ki-Ho is actually Bo-Geol. It's too late by then as Woo-Hak, his brother, also develops feelings for her. But he would never get in the way of his younger brother’s happiness and he protected the two while also dealing with his own heart break.

Seo Dal-Mi, Nam Do-San and Han Ji-Pyeong - Start-Up

This one’s probably still debated amongst K-drama fans! While Dal-Mi ended up with Nam Do-San, there’s a huge section of people who still feel Han Ji-Pyeong was actually the one she should’ve said yes to. Simply because he had no one and she was literally the only person he truly cared about. But Ji-Pyeong, being older than the other two, just let them fall in love while he was secretly in pain.
