Who is he?
Interestingly, Baba was born on 15th August, 1967, as patriotic a day as can be, and his real name is not known. I say real name because I find it tough to believe that his parents named him as secularly as they could with Ram and Rahim in there to create a balance. Born in Rajasthan, he made his way to the top of the Dera Sacha Sauda, a religious cult founded in 1948.
He assumed the role as Chief of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect in the year 1990, at the age of 23 and has been known to be closely involved in politics, even openly declaring his support and asking his followers to vote for a certain party, INC in the past, and BJP most recently.
Singh and his wife Harjeet Kaur have two daughters named Amarpreet and Charanpreet. They also have a son Jasmeet, who is married to Husanmeet, a daughter of the Indian National Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi.
Singh also adopted his confidante Honeypreet as his daughter, who has appeared in a few movies with him. Honeypreet is also rumoured to be his lover in real life.
The Indian Express placed Singh 96th in their list of the 100 most powerful Indians of 2015.
How did he go viral?
Well, Baba’s trysts with internet fame, or infamy have been many. Although his most recent claim(not) to fame happened to be his conviction and subsequent sentencing to prison for two rape cases against him.
His followers created a ruckus that led to widespread riots, curfews in two states, immense loss of lives and property, and even led to the suspension of internet connectivity in the state of Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh.
Earlier, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan shot to mainstream fame across the country as trailers of his debut movie, MSG: The Messenger began to appear across television screens and on social media. It was the subject of mass hysteria as people had a hard time dealing with just about everything they saw on screen, right from the gaudy attire to the hibernation season bear demeanor.
And a sequel to the movie was announced even before the first one was released. This time, titled, MSG-2 : The Messenger, followed by MSG : The Warrior Lionheart, reminiscent of the kind of email addresses we all had as early teens, stringing together two or three of the most cool words we knew! (personally I was more into WWE, so mine was Brock Lesnar something but that’s a story for another day.)
And of course there was another one titled, Hind Ka Naapak Ko Jawab : MSG Lionheart 2. Yeah, I see it too. And finally, 2017 had Jattu Engineer for itself.
Well those ships have sailed, hit multiple icebergs, drowned and I wish I could say forgotten, but Baba being Baba, had to trend again, although this time, it was not by his choice.
It was the special CBI court’s wish and no matter how many people assembled, rioted, threatened to ‘wipe India off the map’ and other random threats, Judge Jagdeep Singh did not budge and sentenced Gurmeet Ram Rahim to jail for 20 years for raping two women, and he was also fined INR 30 Lakh rupees, INR15 Lakhs to be paid to each of his victims.
Many Twitter users expressed their thoughts about the judicial system's big win!
So, how did social media respond when news of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan’s conviction and sentencing broke?
Yes, there were memes (duh!).
Let me bring you the best ones.
As good as it gets right? Hopefully India is going to be free of this God man for the next 20 years. Wonder, where will the memes come from!
