Here are some unforgettable moments from the 2024 Paralympics that will stay with us:
While amazing skills are a must for athletes at the Paralympics, the archery events have especially caught everyone's attention. People excitedly talking about India’s 17-year-old, Sheetal Devi, who hit a perfect bullseye without using her arms. Although she has now been eliminated, she has made history as the youngest female para-archery competitor.
The 22-year-old Paralympian, Maisie Summers-Newton, not only clinched gold in the women’s SB6 100m breaststroke but also won gold in the 200m individual medley. She finished five seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Zakia Khudadadi had to leave Afghanistan after the Taliban banned sports there. Since then, she joined the refugee team at the Paris Paralympics and won a bronze medal this year. She’s also made history as the first member of the refugee Paralympic team to win a medal.
Blind long jumpers at the Paris 2024 Paralympics wowed audiences with their impressive jumps, guided by sighted helpers who clap and call out to direct them. We especially loved Italian jumper Arjola Dedaj, who wore a giant butterfly-shaped mask during the final, and her jump went viral on the internet.
On August 31st, British archer Jodie Grinham made history as the first athlete to win a Paralympic medal while pregnant, earning a bronze in the individual event.
On September 1, Team GB made it to the headlines winning 12 medals in a single day. Hannah Cockroft, a wheelchair racer, kicked things off with a gold medal in the women's wheelchair racing event, leading the way for her team.
Paralympic sprinter Alessandro Ossola didn’t make it to the men’s T63 100m final in Paris, but he still left with a smile after proposing to his partner trackside in an emotional moment. This heartwarming proposal is winning hearts across the internet.
These moments have been amazing, but the games are still going strong. We can’t wait to see more of such incredible sportsmanship and inspiring stories as the Paralympics continue. Here’s to more fantastic performances ahead!
