Vidhu Vinod Chopra's documentary Shikara: Tribute to my mother talks about his mother's plight of leaving her home in 1990 after Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee from Kashmir.
It was in 1990 that the Hindus fled from Kashmir by JKLF (Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front). After the central government agreed to integrate Jammu and Kashmir into India, the hostility among the people became the reason behind them coming to the streets and shouting slogans against the government wanting all the Kashmiri pandits to be fled from the state. This created tension and unrest among the people with millions forced to leave their homeland. Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra's mother Shanti Devi Chopra was one of the Kashmiri pandits who settled in Mumbai after being forced out of Kashmir. Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently released a documentary, Shikara: Tribute to my mother, of his mother revisiting her home in Kashmir. She shared her dilemma of having to leave her own home. She recounts the day when she received a call from her friend saying that the militants were looting and burning Hindu's house while Shanti Devi was in Mumbai for the premiere of Parinda.
