An ode to Nightingale of India aka Sarojini Naidu, widely known for her heartwarming poems, her above par oratory skills and symbolism of women empowerment as we reminisce her on her 140th birth anniversary.
Sarojini Naidu is widely recognized as the Nightingale of India or Bhartiya Kokila was a freedom fighter and social activist who was a dynamic advocate for independence in India and the upliftment of women. She took part in the Civil Disobedience movement, Salt March and Quit India Movement which she was jailed for along with other freedom fighters. She was rewarded Kaisar-i-Hind Medal by the British government for her work during the plague epidemic in India.
Sarojini Naidu was a benchmark in the movement of women empowerment. She helped in the establishment of the Women's Indian Association, which fought against the suffrage of Indian women and represented Indian women at the Round Table Conference. She was also the first woman governor of Independent India along with also being the First woman president of Indian National Congress. She broke stereotypes in the time when India was not independent.
