Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video review

Starring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video is a melting pot of regressive jokes, random detours and a never ending saga of climaxes.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video review: This year has been the year where re-releases have been on a rise like never before. It had me thinking why cinema houses have had to resort to old classics to bring the audience back to the theater, but then I watched Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video and got my answer! There have barely been any movies released this year that had the power to fill a theater to its brim the way a K3G does even 24 years post its release. Story is of course the main thing that’s not sitting right with us these days but makers today have become rather lazy even with the titles; I’ll age by the time I finish saying the movie’s name. In the first half of 2024, it was ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ and now we have ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’. No one has the time to say it out or type it every single time!

Coming to the story, which should be the core of any film, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video doesn’t have one at all! Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), a mehendi artist from Rishikesh, marries Vidya (Triptii Dimri), a doctor. But the evidence of her profession in this film is as slim as any hope of meaning in the screenplay! She is seen in the kitchen and in the bedroom but never at a hospital. On their honeymoon, Vicky convinces Vidya to record themselves having sex. They make a CD out of it for memory’s sake but much to their shock, their house is robbed that night; along with the CD player goes the CD that was so precious to them. This begins the chaos of errors in the film.

Honestly, for a topic like this, there’s a lot that the makers could have done to make it a stand out movie, but instead, it makes you want to stand out of the theater as soon as possible. There’s not a single relatable character in a film that is supposed to be a family entertainer. There’s a grandfather who is blind from one eye, a nephew who lisps, two Suneil Shetty look-alikes for some reason, Vidya's mom constantly talks while chewing paan in her mounth and then there's a spinster who hates sharing the same name as the house help.

But this isn’t even the biggest problem that I have with the film - it's the way it treats women! Triptii Dimri, over the trajectory of her career, has somehow now become the flag bearer of the female lead who plays the object of all sexual desires, right from Animal, Bad Newzz to now this film. I was also oftentimes taken aback with the way the house help was treated in this movie. In the beginning, when Vidya’s first fiance leaves her and mentions how he'd rather marry a ‘naukrani’ than marry a non-virgin, the house help jokes saying she doesn’t want to be a homewrecker, to which he replies, "If you talk too much, I’ll hit you with my elbow on your teeth’. If this wasn’t triggering enough, later on, the grandfather falls on her bosom because he is half blind. The police inspector asks her to change her name because she shares it with the spinster sister, he asks her to shift her name from ‘Chanda’ to ‘Brahmand’ because she is overweight. It’s alarming to me how all of this was written with the intent of creating humor in the film because it's anything but funny.

To be honest, in this series of wannabe slapstick jokes where nothing lands, the only good thing about the film is in fact Mallika Sherawat. It was refreshing to see her on-screen after years. She comes with her own attitude and I loved it. She doesn’t try too hard to be funny like this film does simply because it comes so naturally to her. In her introduction scene, where she comes back home wearing jeans and T-shirt, she says, "These are my bombay clothes’ to which someone replies, ‘Thank god she didn’t go to Africa!’ because of course belittling women wasn’t enough, they threw in a bit of racism there too! Which is also why someone like Mallika Sherawat and a seasoned actor like Vijay Raaz are limited to a lackluster screenplay when they have abundance of talent to offer as actors. Maybe one day we’ll see a spin off film just on Mallika Sherawat’s character; that’s one story I’ll be sat for!

The film also feels like it's never ending! Just when you think it’s over, it randomly takes a turn into the horror-comedy genre just because Stree worked at the box office. Then it is followed by a loud and emotional speech by Rajkummar Rao to the man who they found out was secretly filming them and many other newly married couples. And then it is followed by still finding the missing CD. It just keeps unfolding for no reason at all and, in the midst of it all, they have remixed two good old songs which is also the trend these days. The first one was ‘Sajna Ve Sajna’ which we originally saw in Kareena Kapoor’s Chameli. But Shehnaaz Gill shakes a leg on this version and it’s not up to the mark. The second song is Daler Mehendi’s ‘Sade Naal Rahoge toh Ash Karoge’ in which the singer himself makes a cameo and does a Gangnam Style kind of hook step with the leads. It's like they are trying every recipe that’s worked so far but remixing songs is one that needs to stop STAT!

There’s also a scene in the film where Vicky contemplates taking his life and is saved by Vidya just in time. It is shown to be like it's no big deal and he says, "You stopped me from taking my life but what if other couples aren’t like that?" There’s no trigger warning whatsoever but consider this my trigger warning to you before you decide to watch this film over the weekend. With its series of failed arcs, this film makes you wonder when two and a half hours of this will finally pass!
