After a lackluster season 3, the latest installment of Only Murders in the Building is surprisingly spooky, unpredictable, funny all at the same time and we’re hooked!
Our favorite podcasting trio is back with yet another murder mystery in the building. But this time around it breaks a lot of patterns that it has been previously following and as a viewer, it has only felt like a breath of fresh air. First things first, we all know that the previous season ended with Sazz (Jane Lynch) getting murdered in Charles’ apartment. When the new season started I expected Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) to find the body in Charles’ house post their broadway celebration party. But much to my surprise, the body wasn’t there for the trio to find it in their most quintessential way. Just when you think there’s about to be a reaction, there isn’t. Simply because there is nobody lying around to discover this time around and that’s the first spooky arc the season opener brings to you.
The next morning, the three of them get an email from Paramount Pictures that a movie is in works based on their infamous crime podcast. So Oliver bids goodbye to his broadway career and the trio flies to Hollywood to see what this is all about. When they enter the meeting, they’re greeted by a number of big shots at Paramount who make them feel like they are the idols in the room. But Mabel is too smart to get swooned by all of that attention. She sees them for who they really are. She realizes that the script that they’ve come up with is a very superficial version of their lives. So before they sell their rights away to Hollywood, they want to take a minute to think. At the after party they meet the cast who is going to be playing them. Eva Longoria is going to be playing Mabel, Zach Galifianakis will be seen as Oliver and Eugene Levy will be playing Charles. Now, last season we had the legendary Meryl Streep join the cast who fully stole the show. This season we yet again have popular faces from Hollywood join the gang. I had my preconceived notion about this when I watched the trailer. I felt like it might distract us from the story, but surprisingly it all syncs in well at least so far and let’s be honest, Eugene Levy and Steve Martin reuniting since Father of the Bride is just too iconic to ignore.
This season also feels like Mabel is going to be more sure of herself and build something concrete. Taking advice from the reel life Mabel aka Eva, she asks the producers for a hefty amount for making a movie on her, so she can build something big out of it. Meanwhile someone is pretending to be Sazz and texting Charles so he doesn’t frantically go searching for her. But knowing their curious minds, they enter her LA apartment and here’s when I had goosebumps all over. Charles gets a call from the building watchman about not fixing the hole in the window yet. But the catch is, Charles never even knew there was a hole in his window to begin with. So who really left the note for the watchman? Just like me, a very confused but terrified Charles puts two and two together and realizes the hole is actually a bullet hole and that something has severely gone wrong with Sazz. The trio rushes back to NYC to investigate what went down that night along with Howard's new dog 'Gravey' who is seamelessly placed as one of the clues. It is the tension and the moments where relization hits them and they find the answers they're seeking, that make this story gripping and this episode to be one of the finest season openers.
Without giving away big spoilers, it is going to be rather interesting to see how the trio will solve this one in the next nine episodes with bare minimum clues available. The ending shot of Charles being in absolute pain and despair because of what happens to his friend leaves an impact on you because you have never seen his character grieve for someone like that. The goal of the first episode is mainly to get you hooked and ready to watch what the rest of the season has to offer you and it does just that! It has left me waiting to see how this all unfolds. If Sazz was really supposed to be killed in the first place? Or she took the hit because she looks so similar to Charles? Will the trio be able to hold off strong amidst all the guest stars? Will the rest of the season be as unpredictable as this episode was? It’s like a can of mysteries has been opened and we’re not complaining!
