Follow Kar Lo Yaar: Attempts to be an eye-opener but lacks narrative cohesion

Ever catch yourself thinking, 'What’s it like to be one of those social media stars?' We see their lives splashed across our screens, all polished and perfect, but have you ever wondered what really goes on behind those posts? Amazon Prime's Follow Kar Lo Yaar offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the life of Uorfi Javed. This nine-episode Hindi reality-follow series directed by Sandeep Kukreja and produced by Fazila Allana and Kamna Menezes under Sol Productions Pvt. Ltd., attempts to peel back the layers of what it truly means to live in the spotlight of the digital world. 

If you’re not familiar with the inner workings of the entertainment industry, Follow Kar Lo Yaar attempts to be an eye-opener. As expected, it shows you the thought that goes behind everything that happens behind the brand collaborations, public appearances, or even just a single social media post you see online. However, it goes beyond the glitz, shining a light on the emotional and psychological toll this lifestyle can take. We see Uorfi dealing with miscommunications, facing the fallout from blunders, and struggling with moments of self-doubt that remind us that even those who appear confident and composed have their vulnerable moments. 

But that’s just one aspect of the show. The show explores Uorfi’s personal life through her relationships with family and friends, which are often chaotic and complicated. The series subtly explores how the support, or lack of it from loved ones can heavily influence one’s personal beliefs and life choices. Unlike the chaotic relationships we may have experienced, the ones in the show almost feel tangential, like they’re pulling focus from what the show is actually trying to convey. While the scenes focusing on Uorfi’s efforts to maintain her relevance as a digital celebrity are engaging, the family drama sometimes feels like it’s steering the narrative away from its intended course.

This brings me to a significant issue with the show—its lack of clear direction. Throughout the series, I found myself questioning the show's real purpose. The show started with Uorfi talking about her plans to launch a brand, emphasizing her desire to become an entrepreneur with a line of foolproof women’s wear solutions. Naturally, I expected this entrepreneurial journey to be a central theme. Yet, surprisingly, it’s barely mentioned until the final episode, where it suddenly reappears as if to tie everything together with an inspirational finale. By then, though, the impact of this storyline is diluted, and it doesn’t land with the punch it should have. Although the show tries to appeal to the audience with the narrative of a young, ambitious entrepreneur navigating the ups and downs of building a dream from scratch, it falls short. The storyline loses its direction along the way and the finale doesn’t quite deliver the sense of fulfillment or inspiration you'd expect.

Moreover, there are several moments in the series where the writing leaves you puzzled, especially while dealing with topics like surgeries and skin treatments. Uorfi, who is presented as someone confident in her choices, the show casually touches on these subjects without any real reasoning. Cosmetic surgery is often a controversial topic, especially in the context of digital celebrities who are under constant pressure to maintain a certain image. Even with the chance to have a thoughtful discussion on the subject, Follow Kar Lo Yaar glosses over it in a way that feels dismissive. The show mentions these procedures in passing without addressing the broader conversation about body image, societal expectations, and the psychological impact of such choices. This lack of depth only undermines the gravity of the subject. 

In the end, Follow Kar Lo Yaar is a mixed bag. On one hand, it pulls back the curtain on a digital celebrity's life trying to maintain an online persona and on the other, its muddled narrative may leave you feeling ready to tune out. There are some moments where the show aims to be aspirational but ends up coming off as cringe-worthy. The show has moments where it could have been something much more thoughtful, but it falls short by not fully committing to the themes it introduces.
