Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 1 review

Emily in Paris Season 4 began with a rather repetitive arc and here’s why we feel the story had nothing out of the ordinary to offer us!

Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 1 review: The first season of Emily in Paris took us all by storm. Simply because Emily's (Lily Collins)  life out of nowhere turned upside down and she was overnight living the European summer dream! She was living in the city of love, romanticizing all things French, wearing the most stunning ensembles we have ever seen and falling in love with an absolute hunk who also happens to be an impeccable chef. It is the life most of us can only fantasize about and hence the show proved to be that much-needed light-hearted escape from reality for us. But as the seasons went forward, we started to see a pattern, a repetitive loop at that. Here’s how it goes- Emily starts off strong at work and decides to take hold of her life- she eventually makes a mess at work- which leads to her making a mess in her love life too- she is always stuck in a love triangle- and then she confides in her best friend for advice while negating her issues.

Season 4 is no different than this. It starts off where it left us last, which is the aftermath of Camille (Camille Razat) and Gabriel’s (Lucas Bravo) wedding that broke off. Gabriel and Emily are still in love with each other and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) gets his heart broken and goes MIA. Meanwhile, Camille is pregnant with Gabriel’s child but has been cheating on him with another woman. Mindy (Ashley Park) is still struggling when it comes to kick-starting her career and Emily’s workplace has a new issue every single day. Now, we all love a good love triangle drama but the season so far only makes Emily look like the red flag. She simply cannot make up her mind between Alfie and Gabriel and does not want to disappoint either. Which leads her to constantly juggle her attention between the two. When she eventually does follow her heart, it felt rather abrupt and an ending that Alfie’s character did not deserve at all. He was nothing but nice to her and gave her more chances than one can imagine and yet he never got the closure he truly deserved. Spoiler Alert - when Emily and Gabriel do get together, she constantly feels suffocated between his and Camille's new equation which is co-parenting their baby that’s on the way.

In the first five episodes, things go exactly how you’d predict they would. We knew Alfie would be out of the equation, we knew Camille would create trouble and we knew Julien would come back to Agence Gateaux. Might I say, it was easy to predict even the major spoilers this season simply because that’s how much we have gotten used to the screenplay. There’s a scene towards the end where Gabriel says he is the luckiest man alive because he has a girlfriend like Emily and a baby mama like Camille- it was the most french thing ever on the show so far and you can literally see Camille’s face go pale as she is hiding a huge secret, that is only about create chaos ahead. The only character who has truly owned herself this season has been Sylvie (Philippine Leroy- Beaulieu). She makes a name for herself and her new found company in the world of marketing. She is finally embracing her feelings towards her husband and supports him in his career and for the first time we get a glimpse into her personal life as well. She is breaking down her walls for us slowly and steadily while still being the boss lady that she is.

On the fashion front, Emily strikes as usual. From haute couture designs to chic work wear, every frame feels colorful with her stellar fashion choices. The show also does a great job at making Paris feel more aesthetic than it already is. Especially a rooftop scene in particular that goes down in the top 5 most beautiful shots in the show.

But overall, Emily in Paris season 4 so far has not been that extravagant drama series that can’t make you stop binging like the first season did. I wish they had also dealt with some more sensitive issues in the show more wisely and not just for the sake of adding it to the story. With only five episodes left, I wonder how they’re going to wrap up all the loose ends seamlessly and an end to all the drama that is about to ensue in the second part!
