Letters

Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of popular movies and TV shows that relied on letters to get their emotions across. While they were pivotal to the plot, they also helped us keep old school romance alive and we’re thankful for that!

There’s just something so romantic about receiving letters IRL. It’s the fact that someone has taken effort for you in the digital era when anything and everything can be communicated through a text. But even zillion emojis and various effects cannot come close to someone’s handwriting. It’s something that stays with us forever as compared to a text that can be deleted in the blink of an eye. A letter has often been a medium to portray old school romance and even play an important role in taking the plot forward. The most iconic example of this would be ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ when Tina left her daughter letters to read after she passed away. If it weren’t for those letters, Rahul and Anjali would never fall in love and there would be no movie tbh. But this is not the only film where letters have played an important role in a Dharma film.

We’ve also seen Jennifer and Naina weep as they read Gia’s mom thanking Jennifer for taking care of her daughter and raising her as her own. It proved that sometimes letters give us the closure we all seek.

Writing letters for someone is also a certified love language! Even a film like ‘The Lunchbox’ where even though they are pen pals, they find solace in each other’s company in a way that even people around them are not able to give. They literally pour their hearts out to each other while also understanding what the opposite person is feeling and that kind of communication can only be done through letters IMO!

In Shershaah, Siddharth Malhotra who plays Captain Vikram Batra, highly anticipates the letters from his partner, Dimple. It was her letters that sustained him in a military environment where he was bound to keep his duty first. Or when in Bareilly Ki Barfi, Kriti and Ayushmann constantly exchanged letters with one another without even knowing who they really are and it was the only reason behind them getting together in the end.

But it’s not just Bollywood that has represented the power of letters in their movies, K-dramas and Hollywood have given us some masterpieces as well! Throughout the seven Harry Potter films, letters have often played an important role. It was literally the way Harry found out he was a wizard. And it was how he stayed in touch with Ron and Hermione during their vacations.

None of us hopeless romantics are ever going to forget the scene in ‘The Notebook’ where Noah told Allie that he wrote her letters every single day for 2 years and how he desperately waited for her to write back. We all sobbed and how!

The K-drama ‘Start-Up’ is also heavily based on the female character and the second lead writing letters to each other when they were kids. They both found a friend in each other at a very difficult time in their lives. This eventually even led to her finding the love of her life who was everything she had ever imagined a partner to be!

In this era where things are constantly replacing one another, letters are sure to never go out of style! They always have and always will be a character in itself in movies and of course in real life too!
