Wake up Sid

Wake Up Sid was a love letter to not just the city of Mumbai but also to photographers out there and here’s what I took away from the film that screams comfort!

If you’re a Wake Up Sid fan, one of the major reasons why you love Sid as a character is because of his photography. Whether you love photography or are average at it, we all have a photographer somewhere inside us. Throughout the film, photography plays a very important role in taking the movie forward. Whether it's Sid and Aisha’s love story, his own career, or his relationship with his father, it all started and ended because of photography. Even with his friends, he was that person in the group who always captured the moments and I guess that’s just something that comes with being a good photographer. But there are so many things to learn from the film if you’re a budding photographer as well!

Here’s a few that I learnt!

Start somewhere

It wasn’t like Sid had done some major course on photography for him to be as good as he was. Sometimes following your passion requires you to start somewhere and that can literally begin at home.

Find beauty in the smallest nooks and corners

Sid had an eye for aesthetics and good photography. He found beauty in lanes, people, animals and in things that we would never even think of! The movie made me appreciate the things around me and taught me that photography does not always mean clicking pictures of grand locations or when your friends and family have dressed up; you can turn the most mundane thing Instagram worthy rather easily!

Falling in love with your subject helps

You obviously cannot fall in love with all your subjects but it just hits different when you are capturing someone who means a lot to you. The way Sid captured Aisha, his mom and his neighbors melted my heart throughout the film. It was as if you could see the love transcend through the picture.

Every picture has a story to tell

Sid’s first magazine picture was one at the beach with Aisha’s feat resting in the air wearing a beautiful payal. As a third person, I would instantly be able to gather a story just by looking at the picture he’s clicked. They say ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ and Wake Up Sid taught me just that!

Find your own niche

From the first frame to the last, you can literally see Sid’s photography journey unfold in front of you! It started from just a mere hobby to actual serious photography in a well established magazine. It's all about getting to know yourself better over the years and finding your own style in a sea of photographers!
