Hollywood movies of different genres became the talk of the town in the first half of the year. Here’s what we loved so far and why!
While Bollywood has had its streak of ups and downs at the box office in the first half of 2024, Hollywood became our reason to escape into the world of cinema. Starting with Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell’s Anyone But You had its theatrical release in India this February while it had already broken box office collections in the US back in 2023 itself. This movie brought back the nostalgia of rom-coms from the early 2000's that we terribly miss today. Then came sequels like Dune 2 and Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 which were highly anticipated by the fans.
While Dune 2 garnered a lot of critical acclaim, Inside Out 2 went on to become the highest grossing film of the year so far. And if it wasn’t enough to see Zendaya mesmerize us in Dune 2, we also absolutely loved her in Challengers. After the Barbenheimer phenomenon last year, the male protagonist from Barbie aka Ryan Gosling and the female lead from Oppenheimer aka Emily Blunt, got together and made an action thriller, Fall Guy that kept us hooked from the first frame to the last. We’ve all seen enough proof of John Krasinski’s fabulous directorial skills in A Quiet Place, and this year, he came out with his next directorial, IF, starring the one and the only Ryan Reynolds. He even had a little ‘The Office’ reunion with Steve Carell on this film. You know an Anne Hathaway movie can never go wrong and with The Idea of You, not only do we see her making her OTT debut but we also see a literal fan fiction come to life.
Needless to say, 2024 has given us the best of everything so far!
A classic enemies-to-lovers story that we had not seen on-screen for a pretty long time, Anyone But You is that quintessential rom-com that you watch when you just want to feel-good and it is the reason why the film was so talked about earlier this year.
Still running housefull in theaters, weeks after its release, Inside Out 2 was released nine years after the first film was released. That’s how long the wait was for some of us. The movie authentically and beautifully portrays various different emotions that we feel. It's being highly praised for how relatable it is especially the manner in which mental health issues like anxiety are showcased. This film has now collected a whopping 1 billion dollars at the box office worldwide.
The movie stars Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’ Connor. The chemistry between the three and the various sexual layers the film unfolds brought out mixed feelings from the audience. Regardless, Challengers went on to become one of the most talked about films of 2024.
Fall Guy not only brings the life of stuntmen into limelight but also deepens the plot as Ryan Gosling gets stuck in a much more tricky situation than he thought he was in. How he makes his way out of it along with Emily Blunt is what kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
After a successful part one, Dune 2 was a magnum opus that could be enjoyed only on the big screen and the viewers went to see how the story unfolds further in large numbers. To prevent a terrible future that he foresaw, Paul is now stuck between choosing between the love of his life and the fate of the universe and that’s where the heart of the film lies.
IF
Most kids have imaginary friends or treat their toys as friends. John Kransinski took that childhood memory and made a movie where a girl can see everyone’s imaginary friends and sets on an adventure to reunite them. We’ve all loved Kransinski as an actor but we loved him even more as a director and this film is added proof of that.
Coming straight out of every fan girl’s major fantasy, The Idea of You became popular for its fan-fiction like storyline, Nicolas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway’s chemistry and the music that made it to the billboard charts even though the band from the movie was fictional.
Oscar-nominated films
While the rest of the world had already finished their Oscar movie marathon, all of these contenders were released in India earlier this year. May December starring Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman and Charles Melton portrayed an eerie and unsettling real life story. Anatomy of a Fall was a philosophical courtroom drama that was in the running for Best Picture. The Holdovers, a sweet slice of life film left us feeling warm on the inside. All of these films were eagerly awaited by cinephiles here so we could be well versed with the nominees before the Oscars ceremony this March.
Which of these films entertained you the most in the first half of 2024? Let us know in the comments below!
