Barbenheimer was the ultimate movie showdown between two of the best cast and crews of the movie industry. On its anniversary, we dig into what we learnt from this iconic moment in the world of entertainment!
We’ve seldom made celebrity couple ‘ship’ names trend on social media, but rarely do we make a combined term for two rival movies releasing on the same day. Barbeinheimer is the result of movies Barbie and Oppenheimer put together and the craziness behind it all started last year when both the films were announced to be released on the same day i.e. July 21, 2023. There was a massive hype for both films and for very different reasons. For Barbie, it was the beautiful Margot Robbie in the lead bringing an important part of our childhood come to life, and above all, it was directed by Greta Gerwig who is known to ace her women centric films. On the other hand, there was Oppenheimer which starred the phenomenal Cillian Murphy in the lead and was directed by Academy Award winner Christopher Nolan.
The film was Nolan and Murphy’s seventh collaboration and the movie was based on the maker of the nuclear bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So it goes without saying that these films had a lot on stake and the hype over it spread like wildfire. It came to a point where it had the entire world choosing sides and discussing in what order they should watch the film. Our social media feeds were filled with Barbenheimer memes, Reels and other content that was constantly churned out of the healthy competition between these two movies. There have been major blockbusters released on the same day before but never had we ever seen it become a phenomenon the way Barbeinheimer did!
Today, a year later, we dissect the aftermath of it all!
Two big films releasing on the same day isn't always such a bad thing
It doesn’t always have to be this or that. Everyone has their favorites for sure but, at the end of the day, both the films benefited from the Barbenheimer hype. Everyone planned their days in a way where they watch both the film back to back and that’s a fun day at the movies. T'was purely a treat for movie buffs!
The two movies being so drastically different from each other shows that there’s place for all kinds of stories to co-exist
Oppenheimer is the behind the scenes of literally one of the deadliest nuclear bomb attacks in history; it's the biopic of the person behind it all and his path of self destruction. Barbie is our childhood doll coming to life and asking us to embrace our true selves. Both the films are poles apart from each other and yet the viewers showered both with so much love. This shows that every good story will find its audience.
It was the biggest movie marketing strategy we’ve seen in recent years
Barbie had partnered with a plethora of brands to the point where there was just an overload of pink around us. Not to forget, Margot Robbie’s press tour fashion where she wore Barbie doll outfits IRL! The terms ‘Barbenheimer’ and the content created around it on social media itself became a huge segway for marketing for both the films!
People tried to make the next ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon but there really can be only one!
After both the films were released, people tried to create this kind of craze for other big films releasing as well. For instance - Wicked and Gladiator 2 are releasing on the same day and no matter how hard the fans try to talk about it, it just won’t blow up the same way that Barbenheimer did!
The world was divided in two colors and people dressed up for both movies
The ones who went for Barbie first wore pink and Oppenheimer fans wore black. Just by the outfit that day it became obvious which movie they supported. Regardless, dressing up for the movies should definitely become a thing given how much excitement it adds to it all and Barbenheimer made it feel like a once in a lifetime moment in pop culture.
It was inspiring to see lead actors from both films support each other
Nobody will forget the moment Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig went to watch Oppenheimer and posted a picture on social media along with Cillian Murphy’s poster. Cillian Murphy, too, mentioned in an interview that he watched Barbie and loved the film. The two leads were also paired together for the actors on actors interview by Variety later that year where they spoke about how much they admire each other’s work.
