PS- I trailer

Mani Ratnam's PS- I trailer gives you a glimpse into the grand spectacle that will unfold Tamil Nadu's most beloved story of the Chola Dynasty and its game of thrones!

On one side we have Brahmastra, a sci-fi fantasy of the superhero genre that is all set to release tomorrow and is already being referenced with Marvel. And then we have Ponniyin Selvan I aka PS- I trailer released which takes you back into history but definitely reminds you of Troy or GoT. Now it's natural for people to draw out references because of certain content being in the same genre or holding quite a similar premise. But people should also not forget that India is a country with a vast history that divided itself into dynasties. Mani Ratnam's much-awaited film based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan will tell the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman in two parts, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I (947 CE – 1014 CE).

The trailer that spans almost 3 and a half minutes introduces us to its main characters that will be involved in this game of thrones. With the narration by Kamal Haasan in Tamil and Anil Kapoor in Hindi, “1000 years ago, the oracles foretold that the comet demanded the sacrifice of royal Chola blood", begins the time-as-told story of rivalry and treachery lined with conspiracies, politics, romance, and internal as well as external conflict. At the center of the story are three siblings in the Chola Kingdom— Aditya Karikalan (Vikram), Kundavai (Trisha), and Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi). Vanthiyathevan (Karthi), the trusted comrade of Aditya Karikalan is entrusted with a secret mission while the gorgeous princess, Pazhuvoor Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) has a few tricks up her sleeve.

The trailer with extra bright tonality and incredible sets and production truly gives us a glimpse of the magnum opus that it's truly going to be. With music by A R Rahman, this film will chart the power struggles during the Chola reign between ADs 900 and 950. It is set to be released in a two-part and also stars Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, Parthiban R, and Sobhita Dhulipala in important roles. Cinematography by Ravi Varman and edited by Sreekar Prasad, the film is produced under the banner of Lyca Productions and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies. It will be released on September 30 in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages.

Though the anxiousness of the Tamil people is given since this is a part of their cultural literacy and if not done right will be a disappointment, it's still a great effort by Mani Ratnam to bring such a complex, culturally rich story forward on the 35 mm screen. It was his dream to make this film which got shelved so many times in the past before, and given that it's a Ratnam film you expect it to be as rich in its emotional content as in physical warfare. Even though it might be that such vast epics need a format like that of a series like GoT or HOTD to be plotted thoroughly, so far the trailer's got a grand launch by Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth in the presence of scores of admirers and celebrities on the night of September 6 doesn't seem unfair.
