Netflix is apparently aiming to cut down on password sharing by sending a pop-up that would prompt people to verify their accounts to continue watching.
Netflix and Chill is all fun until the one who owns the account fails to make the payment. We all know who we are even though we might not personally know the person who's account we are using. The platform has helped us build this unique relationship and we are loving it. But the platform, not so much.
The globally popular digital platform, with over 203 million global users, is testing out its new feature where it knows which user is sharing a platform. Sharing passwords have become a culture of its own determining the trust and love in a relationship. The platform has previously said it was comfortable with users sharing their passwords. Although the platform is known for its multiple screen sharing features, it is trying to crack down on the practice.
According to reports, some users have received a pop-up on their TVs. The pop-up reads, “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” The message asks them to confirm it by entering a code included in a text message or email sent to the subscriber. The viewers, so far, are also given the option to continue watching without entering the code. More than 40m accounts for major streaming services being “borrowed” by non-paying users globally, according to a study by Cordcutting.com in 2019.
