These films and TV series feature some characters who identify as trans and here's why they're a must-watch.

Art and culture can bring about great change. Over the years, films and TV series have become a huge part of this process. Because some well-told stories can help one understand things that you and I are unable to explain well. Every community has the right to tell their stories and share them with the world. These films and TV series include stories that represent the Trans community, spread awareness and help create a more inclusive society. One film that talks about raising awareness can start a whole movement, we wonder what an entire list can do!

Tangerine

Directed by Sean Baker, this movie tells the story of a hooker and her best friend who set out to find her ex-boyfriend and teach him and his new lover a lesson because he cheated on her while she was in jail.

Super Deluxe - Netflix

Directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, this movie casts Vijay Sethupathi as a trans person. In this film, an unfaithful wife, an estranged father, and an angry boy must all face their demons on one fateful day.

A Fantastic Woman - Amazon Prime Video

Directed by Sebastián Lelio, this film portrays the struggle of being trans. A woman's life is thrown into turmoil following the death of her partner. Mourning the loss of the man she loved, she finds herself under intense scrutiny from those with no regard for her privacy.

The Danish Girl

Directed by Tom Hooper, this film is about the first sex-change operation. Artist, Gerda Wegener asks her husband Einar to pose as a female model for a painting. Things take an unexpected turn when this act triggers Einar to reignite his suppressed identification.

A Kid Like Jake - Netflix

Directed by Silas Howard, this film explores the world of Alex Wheeler and her husband, Greg, who are trying to find the right primary school for their 4-year-old son, Jake. Described as gender-expansive by his adviser, Jake's increasingly erratic behavior starts to cause a rift between the couple. Alex worries that the adults in her son's life are labeling him prematurely, while Greg wonders if Jake's fondness for dressing up might be more than just a phase.

Sex Education - Netflix

This series is about raising awareness among teenagers about sex but it also explores many sexualities. It touches on the topic of the Trans community while explaining how to figure out one's identity.

Pose - Netflix

When New York witnesses the evolution of the ball culture and the rise of the Trump-era, an LGBTQ ball fixture, Blanca, starts her own house and turns mother to a gifted dancer and a sex worker.

Orange is the new Black - Netflix

It's a show about a women's jail and how Piper is imprisoned for the crime, ten years after transporting drug money to Alex. The toughness of prison changes her drastically as an individual, compelling her to do the unthinkable. Orange in the new Black represents the Trans community across the series.

Paatal Lok - Amazon Prime Video

Though the series is about a cynical inspector who is tasked with investigating a high-profile case that leads him into a dark realm of the underworld. There are four criminals shown in the series out of which one represents the life and struggle of being Trans.

Scared Games - Netflix

This series explores a dangerous cat-and-mouse game between a police officer, Sartaj Singh, and criminal overlord Ganesh Gaitonde in Mumbai. In this series, Kukoo plays the role of a Trans person who is a huge part of Gaitonde's life.

A classic that never gets old is CABARET

How many of these have you watched? While these are all more or less fictitious, you can stream some documentaries on the Trans community like Free CeCe, Mala Mala, A Place in the Middle, Passing, Transmormon and Transagenda on Vimeo and Growing Up Coy, Beautiful Darling, Paris Is Burning on Netflix.
