"To be open, I am also trying to break my own preconceived notions about this issue and I am in the process of evolving," says the justice of the Madras HC who ordered parents of a lesbian couple to go for counselling by an LGBTQ+ specialist.

An order passed by the Madras HC on Wednesday is a message for every parent in the world. The court asked the parents of a lesbian couple to undergo counselling to deal with their notions and concerns. The order was in response to a same-sex couple who have been in a relationship for two years and are seeking protection against their parents for their live-in relationship.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh passed the order which is uplifting for couples belonging to the LGBTQA+ community. The couple includes a 22-year-old pursuing MBA and a 20-year-old pursuing BA in Tamil. Both of them are natives of Madura, Tamil Nadu, and have been in a relationship for two years. They stated that they were friends and soon they developed feelings for each other and knew that they wanted to live together for the rest of their lives. It was following the pressure from their family to break up that they took the help of an NGO after they left Madurai.

The judge was very considerate and said that he personally took the time to study and understand the community. He said, "To be open, I am also trying to break my own preconceived notions about this issue and I am in the process of evolving and sincerely attempting to understand the feelings of the petitioners and their parents, thereafter proceed to write a detailed order on this issue." He then ordered the parents to go for counselling to understand the same. Psychologist Vidya Dinakaran was asked to counsel the parents of the two women in April and submit a report of the same on April 26.
