Charan and Bombay The Artist collaborated on Vekh Sohneyaa for Call Me Bae. Here are some deets about how this collab came to be!
Brian Eno once said, “Every collaboration helps you grow" while talking about working with David Bowie to create music. And after listening to Charan and Bombay The Artist's newest offering 'Vekh Sohneyaa' from Call Me Bae, we hope the same for this popular team-up who gave us a song to add to our playlists!
These two emerging artists are making waves in the music scene but it's not their first song that has left people excited. Charan has caused a stir on the internet with songs like Rang Chadheya, Dil Jashn Bole, Tere Siva Jag Mein, and Pyaar Hota Kayi Baar Hai. With the addition of yet another collaborative work, people are also talking about his song Lost & Found, featuring actors Taaruk Raina and Prajakta Koli. While he is making his way into people's playlists with his soulful creations, the Brit-Indian artist, Preeti Singhania aka Bombay the Artist has managed to make a mark with her effortlessly soothing songs. As someone who celebrates the Indian hip-hop genre, her discography is a treasure trove of songs like Pardesiyaan, Manmarziyan, and Mehfil. Her collaboration with Charan for Vekh Sohneyaa manages to bring out the best in both, giving people a new love anthem.
A series that has everyone talking, Prime Video’s Call Me Bae follows Bae through her riches-to-rag story. With tons of pop culture references, this Ananya Panday starrer has become the new obsession in town. While people are taking much-needed fashion inspo from the show, they are also loving the show’s playlist. One song in particular that has left the internet humming is Charan and Bombay The Artist’s Vekh Sohneyaa. The two artists had quite a lot to share about their process of working together to make this song happen, and they discussed it all over a quick chat with us.

Here's what they said!
Vekh Sohneya has quickly become a fan favorite. Can you walk us through the creative process of creating the song and the inspiration behind it?
Bombay The Artist mentions that this song was born about two years ago and how it was never a romantic song at first. "It was always about the anxiousness one feels when their feelings aren't reciprocated—like when you're self-doubting while falling in love. I almost shelved the song, but it came back to life, thanks to Raj, A&R at Bluprint." Once she was put in touch with Charan and he worked his magic, the song felt whole. "Just like that, the song shifted from a feeling of nervousness to a wholesome expression of love and confession!"
Charan has a theory that sometimes songs write themselves. "I feel the way this song came about, Bombay and I were more like mediums for the energy of the song." This was the first time they collaborated; they'd never met in the studio before. "But from the first session that I spent on this song, it felt like the song was writing itself and I just followed its cue. Ofcourse, Bombay is a brilliant songwriter and her verse helps set up my verse like they were written in unison." Charan was very grateful to be on the song with Bombay and Dishant who has produced the beat which also lends in a big way to the energy of the song.
As a duo, how do you approach a project together? Do you have distinct roles in the creation process in this collaboration, or is it more fluid and shared?
Working with Charan was a breezy experience for Bombay. "I don’t think we go in and assign roles of what we’re going to do. We bounce off of each other’s ideas. He's a great composer and then we just work off of who came up with which idea first and then evolve that idea into the song." They focused on the sounds that drew them in first of the production and then eventually bounced off from the same.
She called it a "finish each other's sentence type of a thing, it’s quite cool and relaxed." According to Charan, Bombay and he share very different perspectives as songwriters but the thought of writing the best possible melody or lyrics for an idea is what unites their creative process. They both wanted what was best for the song since they were Pop writers in and out. "In that way, it's extremely fluid."
Who or what influences your music? How does their impact manifest in your work, particularly in this song?
Manifestation is certainly important for Bombay because there should be a goal that you have in your head. "And then you’ve got to believe that you’re gonna achieve that." She always knew there was going to be one song that changed it all and she kind of had a feeling that it would be Vekh Sohneyaa when it was picked up for the show. Charan has been brought up in a house of Bollywood music buffs, even though no one was from the industry. "That, from an early age, inculcated a love for amazing melodies and cinematic soundscapes. That coupled with my love for Modern Pop, is the thought that always drives me to write ear-worms. I think Vekh Sohneyaa stems from this exact thought process."
As emerging artists in the music scene, what have been the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your journey so far?
The most challenging thing for Bombay has always been to put out good quality music and keep it as original as possible which can sometimes be hard because there are always trends going around. "But in an instance like this where songs are done really well and a newer audience is coming back to your discography, they go back and check your old releases and see the effort that you’ve put in from the start, which is quite rewarding." Charan feels the challenge is the reward. "I am truly blessed that I get to make a song and call that work. I aim to be consistent and get better every day. Everything else I leave to the power of music and God."
How did being a part of Call Me Bae impact your career? Did the show’s platform change how you approach your music or the audience?
For Bombay, Call Me Bae impacted her career by bringing her a bigger and newer audience. "It’s given me the platform to showcase my music to more people. It hasn’t changed my approach to music because we did exactly what we normally do. We kept it real." Being a part of a flagship show like Call Me Bae, that's produced by Dharmatic Entertainment has opened doors to a wider audience of listeners who are always in search of good music, according to Charan. "The fact that thematically Vekh Sohneyaa fits in the larger theme that I am trying to communicate through my independent releases, helps a lot. Forever grateful for such an amazing platform to showcase our music."
Your music has a unique blend of sounds and styles. How do you see your sound evolving in the next few years? Are there any new genres or styles you’re keen to explore?
Bombay has always been into experimenting with different sonics. "Depending on where you are and the experiences you have, your music evolves naturally, so there’s nothing I want to explore, apart from maybe wanting to tap into a little bit more R&B." Charan is trying to draw out a writing style and vocal sound that he can call his own. "I'm excited and would like to keep a certain flexibility with the genre or style of production from one song to another." It’s the words, melodies, and, of course, the vocal performance that will form the bedrock of his future catalog.
What advice would you give to other young artists trying to get a break into the music industry?
Bombay advises one to enjoy themselves. "Make the music personal and as real as possible, and you won't fail! Most importantly, stay consistent!" Charan believes in setting mental benchmarks for your artist journey, guidelines for your songwriting and performances on any given record. "Keep hammering away at it without getting jaded by the world around you. It’s you against you. Undeniable excellence is the only goal. Everything else will fall into place."
