Greta Gerwig's Barbie has had everyone under its wraps since its teaser was released so it's no wonder that the Barbie trailer has everyone going gaga too!
Owning a Barbie used to be the dream of every child until it stopped being. The doll quickly lost her identity as soon as everyone grew up, even her song changed for good! But what if Barbie was a real person living in Barbie's Land with all other Barbies and Ken's? Could the loss of relevance in the real world affect her in her very own world? According to the Barbie trailer, that's what Great Gerwig's movie is going to talk about!
Only Great Gerwig could have the thought of creating a Barbie's Land where everything is pink and plastic and all fantastic where everyone gets up, gets ready, and spends time on a beach in pretty pink colors. And by nightfall, they sing, dance, party, and repeat it all the next day. Until one day Barbie mentions 'death' and everything starts changing. Her shower's gone cold, she is off her roof, and the biggest disaster of all - her high heels have gone flat! So Barbie must travel to the real world 'to know the truth about the universe' which is beyond her Barbie bubble. Surprisingly, Ken who follows Barbie all around also joins her on this trip. Could Barbie and Ken together figure out this existential crisis and free themselves of fitting into a box of 'ideas live forever'?

If the lyrics of the song 'I am a Barbie Girl' had a movie made on it, it would exactly look like this. Of course, it's Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) who is helming it so there will definitely be a twisting touch of hers! Sure toys coming off alive and struggling to live in the real world is not an idea not approached before but the land of Barbie is where genitals are missing and yet existing gender roles are assigned and people have professions accordingly. It would be really interesting to see how Barbie frees herself of the boundaries set for her by some patriarchal men who still want to put her back in the box and come into her own while still being relevant.
The Barbie trailer has got everyone jittery with its looks, world, cast, music, and everything. We can't wait for the movie to hit soon enough! It stars Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling as lead characters Barbie and Ken. It also stars Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, and many more.
Barbie hits worldwide in theatres on July 21!
