Lijo Jose Pellissery's directorial, Malayalam movie, Jallikattu becomes India's official entry to Oscars' International movie category.
Jallikattu, the movie that cinematically captured a remote village in Idukki going on a hunt for a bull received a lot of critical acclamation in India and aboard. The movie stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran in prominent roles.
The movie premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. Director Lijo Jose Pellissery also won the Best Director award at the 50th International Film Festival of India for the film. The movie has now become India's official entry in the International Feature Film category.
Jallikattu is the second Malayalam film to make an entry for the Oscars, after the 2011 movie Adaminte Makan Abu. India's last year's entry in the same category was Zoya Akhtar’s musical drama Gully Boy. The movie will, however, need immense promotional activities to make it to the final Oscar nominations. Only three Indian films, Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay! (1988) and Lagaan (2001) have ever made it to the final list of Oscar nominations.
