Imtiaz Ali is that storyteller who paints the romanticised portrait of a tortured artist and understands the inner turmoil of human beings!
A filmmaker whose filmography can be counted on hands but cannot be measured in numbers, Imtiaz Ali a Bihari boy born in Jamshedpur, was heavily influenced by cinema and its power. With a background in theatre, his soul-stirring unique thought process and densely poetic style of filmmaking made him an audience favourite instantly. And who can forget Geet from Jab We Met? A Punjabi girl who is full of life and has never missed a train in her life, misses it for the first time because of this distraught guy, Aditya, and hence they go on a journey together, changing each other lives for good! This film brought massive success to not just Ali but also to Kareena and Shahid. Every dialogue, scene, costume, and every breath of this film was learned by heart by the audience.
His first directorial, Socha Na Tha, kept a unique perspective of how two people who met for an arranged marriage and reject each other ended up falling for each other surprisingly. It was his depiction of female characters in a bold style also being the heart of the stories that won hearts everywhere. Even though Jab We Met made him a household name, it was Rockstar that made his brand as a director. He was known to explore the darkness within the human psyche and society which also became his philosophy.

Other than that, he also started being known for representing distinctive relationships that represented the new age evolving generation and its idea of romance. Whether it was the Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan starrer Love Aaj Kal, which talked about patching up after breaking up with each other or Cocktail which talked about finding the right person when you are in a casual relationship with someone else. Even the Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda starrer Highway represented an unknown side of two highly troubled people finding their home and solace with each other. Then of course, there's Tamasha, which attained cult status after its release.

His understanding of a tortured artist or a tortured person who is bogged down by society's pressure in a romantic and poetic way gave him his cult fan following. He became a hope for making the world understand art, artists, and storytellers! His beautiful craft is fully visible in his work so much so that his project became a personal journey for everyone who watches them. He has a sense of style for making something so ordinary seem iconic and cinematic!
His collaborations with A R Rahman and Pritam gave us some of the best music albums of all time. And even though we haven't seen a strong film from him ever since Jab Harry Met Sejal's debacle, his upcoming project Chamkila has everyone excited! Love Aaj Kal 2, Dr. Arora, She, and Laila Manju are some of his underrated work that haven't seen the same popularity as his other projects, yet they all offer a rare individual take which stays true to his philosophy.
Here's wishing this hatke filmmaker a very happy birthday!
