re-creating Rekha’s looks

"You can pay tribute to Rekha ji all your life and it still won’t be enough as for me she is a diva," says Sushant Divgikar as they re-create some of Rekha's iconic looks.

Talk about being an icon or an ethereal beauty and Rekha will forever make it to the list. She is one the few Bollywood stars who has been able to impact generations with not just the roles she has played onscreen but also by being herself in real life. Even after decades, people go back to her interviews and gasp in awe at her ability to be the most unapologetic version of herself. She is crowned as the ‘It Girl’ of generations and rightfully so. While one can always talk about her incredible ideologies, we can never have enough of her looks. Without a dearth of iconic moments and looks, Rekha has always served making her impeccable contribution to the world of fashion.

Sushant Divgikar also happens to be an icon in their way with their impeccable singing talent and the goddess energy that Rani Ko-he-Nur offers her audience. From walking on ramps to making appearances at events, Sushant has also shown off their fashionista self who always managed to turn heads. As someone who has proudly embraced their feminine side, they decided to re-create and give Rekha a tribute on Women’s Day. From one icon to another, Sushant chose some of Rekha’s most historic looks, giving people a treat. Sushant understands the chokehold that Rekha has on generations, but, what made them want to give her a tribute for Women’s Day? As a fan of Rekhaji, Sushant talks about the pivotal role that she played in shaping them as an artist and a person and said, “I feel like it was high time I showed my admiration and respect for her by recreating some of the iconic characters she’s brought to life onscreen. She is like a ball of energy and the perfect human embodiment of the song “I’m every woman” by Whitney Houstan. In my opinion, there’s no better way to celebrate Women's Day by paying her a well-deserved homage. I hope she likes and I will make sure it reaches her somehow.”

Sushant had more to share on choosing to be Rekhafied on Women’s Day and we had a chat with them to know more about it -

Rekha has managed to define a style that is unique to her. What do you think makes her so iconic?

Rekhaji is such a versatile actor, whether it's Umrao Jaan, Silsila, Ghar, or Khoon Bhari Maang, she has aced these roles and played with such conviction and that for me is the real beauty of being an artist. I don't think 1 tribute is enough for an actor of her caliber I might just have to give 10-15 more tributes to capture all her different looks. I remember in Khoon Bhari Maang, I used to scream and shout and clap when I used to see her in that black leather look or the beautiful golden look where she was doing the photoshoot. You can pay tribute to Rekha ji all your life and it still won’t be enough as for me she is a diva.

Has she been an inspiration to your personal and your drag style?

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I am the biggest fan of Rekhaji and even she has acknowledged this on television. The way I conduct myself is heavily influenced by Rekhaji and that's just how compelling and impactful her character portrayals have been. Her elegance and adaa is what I essentially take away from her characters and what I try to incorporate into my style. She is the undisputed queen of the decade and it only seems fitting that I pay my respects to her with this women’s day tribute by emulating these looks since she is so many different types of women in one.

What was it like recreating her looks? Are there elements that you knew would complete the quintessential Rekha look?

I’m just so happy and thrilled that we finally made this tribute happen. It was a long time coming. For me, Elegance, glam, and the whole golden girl vibe is what defines the “quintessential Rekha look” I have a wonderful team that supports me and makes sure I have all the resources so with that here’s to many more Umrao Jaan moments, and many more ‘main model banna chahti hoon’ moments from all our lives. I wish I could give many more tributes not just to Rekha ji but to other divas that have shaped my personality and my artistry in one way or another.

Can you share 3 of her character looks that you feel are evergreen?

All her looks are iconic but some of them that stand out for me are - the saree moment in Silsila is both simple and impactful. Her eyes portrayed a beautiful mix of innocence and strength, making it a timeless and iconic look. She truly embodies the essence of a goddess, which is why I had to recreate that particular character. Then, my personal favorite, Umrao Jaan purely because of its captivating narration of the courtesans. The golden look in particular is going to be called ‘golden girl vibes only’ whenever I post it and lastly, the one where she is wearing all black, she’s so intimidating in that look that if I were the villain, I would actually be wary of her. If I was Kabir Bedi, I would have just jumped to the crocodiles instead of waiting for her to do it and that's how poignant that look was with the eyes and the open hair.
