Dressing up can be enjoyable, but it often comes with the stress of needing to touch up your makeup throughout the night. We know the hours we spend scrolling through social media finding ways to perfect a makeup look we can finally try on ourselves. But what can one do to end up with a look that will last for the entire night? Festive occasions are all about celebration, joy, and looking your absolute best. As a beauty content creator, I've learned a few tricks to ensure my makeup stays fresh throughout the day, even during the longest events.

Here are my top tips for making your makeup last, especially during festive occasions:
Skin prep is key
I can’t stress enough how important skin preparation is. It’s the foundation of long-lasting makeup and a step I never skip. I start by cleansing my skin to remove any dirt and oils, followed by a toner to balance my skin’s pH. Next, I apply a hydrating serum to boost moisture levels and then layer on a lightweight moisturizer. Finally, I finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect my skin.
Choosing the Right Products
Once my skin is prepped, I focus on selecting the right makeup products. I always opt for a long-wear foundation instead of tinted sunscreen for better durability. I apply thin layers of products and build up the coverage as needed to avoid creasing.
I love using cream products like blush and contour, but I find they don’t last long on their own. To combat this, I set them with a matching powder blush or powder contour. This layering technique really helps keep everything in place. For my lips, I prefer comfortable long-wear matte lipsticks. They stay put and don’t require frequent touch-ups, which is a lifesaver during festive celebrations when I want to enjoy food and drinks without worrying about my lipstick.
Finishing Touches
After applying my makeup, I always finish with a fixing spray. This step is essential for locking everything in place and ensuring my look stays intact throughout the day.
Even with all the prep, I still keep a few touch-up strategies in mind. I dab a small amount of concealer on areas that need refreshing and carry a beauty blender to gently dab it on any creases. Since I have hollows under my eyes that need frequent touch-ups, I always keep a tiny compact powder in my bag. Blotting papers are also a must-have to remove shine and excess oil whenever necessary.
Avoiding common mistakes
Over the years, I’ve seen plenty of common mistakes that can lead to makeup fading or smudging. Many people skip skin prep or confuse setting spray with fixing spray. Remember, fixing spray secures the makeup for the whole day, while setting spray simply helps blend the layers together. Also, be careful not to over-apply concealer under the eyes, as that can make things look cakey. Using the wrong application methods, like dragging sponges, can cause patchiness, too. It’s crucial to use the right products for your skin type and avoid overusing cream products without setting them properly. And of course, always check that your makeup isn’t expired!
My Go-To Products
When it comes to products, I rely on a few favorites to keep my makeup in check. For foundation, I swear by Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place for a luxurious feel, while Maybelline Super Stay Lumi-Matte is my budget-friendly choice. For setting powder, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder is my top pick, but I also love Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder for everyday wear. Smashbox Super Fan Mascara adds the perfect finishing touch to my lashes, while MAC Locked Kiss Ink Lipstick, Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Velvet Lipstick, and Maybelline Vinyl Ink give me vibrant, lasting color on my lips. Finally, I can’t live without PAC Micro Finish Makeup Fixer to lock everything in place.
Enjoy the festivities and let your makeup shine all day long!
