While many of us have already started with Diwali saaf safaai, Sonika Khurana jots down a few cleaning hacks for Diwali that will help make the process seem exciting and leave you more organised.

The one thing that gets everyone’s pants twisted during Diwali, despite it being the most exciting season of the year, it's Diwali ki saaf safaai, which becomes the ultimate goal for every household, with people spending their weekends cleaning up every possible corner of the house. If there is something that hours of scrolling as a young adult has taught us it's how satisfying well-organised cleaning feels. Although most of us do it fearing our parents’ wrath, adults who live alone might know the joy of doing this if done right. The whole process can be therapeutic, especially if it's well organised. Sonika Khurana, an Interior Designer, educator and influencer, has her own set of tips that she follows while cleaning her house. She decided to list down her cleaning hacks that people can use this Diwali which will help make the process feel less stressful.

Declutter

Start by decluttering. Go room by room and separate items into keep, donate, and discard piles. This not only makes cleaning easier but also gives your home a fresh look. It's important to discard things that weren’t used and make space for new items and positive energy.

Cleaning tools

Some very useful finds for Diwali cleaning include a foldable duster with an extendable rod to clean hard-to-reach areas, a magnetic window cleaner that efficiently cleans both sides of glass, a grout pen to refresh old tile grout lines, and some cleaning liquid to clean flooring and tiles and get rid of dirt marks. These tools are very helpful for deep cleaning your home.

Cleaning upholstery

Vacuum-cleaning all sofas, washing cushion covers and pillows, as well as dry-cleaning curtains is necessary every Diwali.

Revive your carpets

Carpets gather a lot of dust and dirt, especially during festive season. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda, leave it for an hour, and vacuum thoroughly. For tough stains, use a mixture of dish soap and water.

Organise before deep cleaning

Focus on organising as you clean. Use drawer organizers, baskets, and storage boxes to keep things neat. Labeling can make it easier to find things later.

Essential oils for a fresh smell

After cleaning, ensure your home smells festive and fresh. Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, or eucalyptus to your mop water, or use a diffuser to spread fragrance around the house.

Diwali is a great time to start fresh, so remember to declutter, organise, and clean for a bright and happy Diwali!
