'Jo azad hai unko azadi mubarak.' Content creators join the country in sharing their rage over women's safety and lack of justice following the Kolkata rape case.
It has been a weird couple of weeks for the people in India while the country was gearing up to bring in 77 years of Independence. The only question that is lingering in everyone’s mind is about the safety and security of women in a country that considers them to be a species of pride. Media and the streets have been witnessing the uproar of the citizens as they joined medical professionals in their protest to find justice for their female colleague. On August 9th, a female trainee doctor's body was found at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital after she was brutally raped and murdered. In an attempt to demand justice and accountability from the authorities, various junior doctors have ceased their services to continue their protest. We are constantly bombarded with reports that have caused women to wake up and immediately worry about their safety. They wonder if they can reach their destination without the fear of being kidnapped, raped, or murdered. And this protest post the Kolkata rape case is a reminder of how things never seem to change.
The idea that women constantly need to be under the radar, protected from men who can easily be ‘distracted’ is nothing but a result of patriarchy. A system that still deems females as the ones that should be saved instead of trying to create an environment where the men know how to behave is an unfortunate reality that doesn't seem to escape us. In the wake of the recent tragedy, it seems like even the ones trying to save our lives are in danger, especially if the said person is a woman. It has left the entire country and the world in complete turmoil compelling them to use every possible media available to share their thoughts. Content creators who are an extension of our lives have also joined the cause by channelling their anger through a medium they know best. “Saari advisory humare liye bachane ka shukriya. Hum better honey ki koshish zarur karenge.” wrote Dolly Singh for a video wishing Happy Independence Day to men, as a discourse of what freedom means today. Meanwhile, Ashish Bhatia recited a poem expressing his grief and anger.
These videos sum up every thought we have had over the last few weeks:
