Shah Rukh Khan is known as the ‘king of romance’, and rightfully so, because there is no other actor who has mastered the art of creating that kind of escapism on-screen! So when better than his birthday to wish for another classic rom-com by the legend himself!
While I’m loving all the ‘hero-saves-the-day’ kinda action in Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki, I cannot help but crave Shah Rukh’s early 2000s era to come back into my life. Don’t get me wrong, Shah Rukh is someone who can equally ace action, comedy and romance at the same time. His movies always make you feel like you have got your money and time’s worth, simply because his films create that safe space for us, where we know in the end he will bring the bad guys to justice and everything will be okay. But while he is fulfilling his dream of being an action star, I cannot help but think about what Aditya Chopra said about his eyes. Those eyes are meant for romance, for looking gently at a woman, those eyes have so much depth they could say a thousand things at the same time. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham recently re-released in the theatres, and after a really long time, an entire generation was transferred back into a happier time. Nostalgia hit us like never before; all of us were hooting and cheering when Shah Rukh entered in his helicopter when he fell head over heels for Kajol literally at first sight, and he had the whole theatre screaming the dialogues together. At that moment, I realised they just don’t make movies like this anymore. The fact that K3G could fill up theatres so many years after its release was because a larger-than-life Shah Rukh Khan romantic is truly the need of the hour.

Here’s why!
There’s no one who loves a woman the way Shah Rukh can!
He is a man written by a woman. There’s no doubt about that. He knows how to love and care deeply and gently. Over the years, he has played characters that have become every woman’s ideal type. Because the kind of personality his characters have is something that we look for in men IRL but, unfortunately, are rarely able to find. The way he describes falling in love with a woman, the way his neck kisses make all of us feel things is something that’ll just stay so precious to our hearts and there’s no one else in Bollywood who can pull that off but him. He is not just a green flag but an entire green forest we all wish to have someday.
He never plays a character that disrespects or objectifies women
We’re in an era where movies like Animal constantly put women down and say the nastiest things about them. So we need a Shah Rukh Khan rom-com for that much needed cleanse of pop culture these days. If you see the trajectory of his roles, not once has he ever disrespected, physically abused or objectified the women who were paired opposite him, and honestly in today’s time we need a man like him to set the right examples. His movies just feel like safe space for women where every imperfectly perfect flaws of ours are made to feel so loved!
We love a good Shah Rukh falling in love slow motion scene
The first time he sees Kajol in K3G, there’s wind blowing, he is smiling at her, she’s dancing and her hair is flying, all in slow motion. We’ve had a plethora of these in his films, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, DDLJ, Kal Ho Naa Ho and when he sees the love of his life, Shaanti Priya for the first time in Om Shanti Om our hearts melt every single time.
From Suraj Hua Maddham to Kal Ho Naa Ho, we love Shah Rukh in a feel-good romantic song
Most of the evergreen romantic songs from the early 2000s are all Shah Rukh Khan’s. He does not only play his character with conviction but also dances like there’s no tomorrow. Just like they don’t make good rom-coms anymore, they also don’t make romantic songs like the 2000s anymore. I mean I still blush everytime I hear ‘Kuch Toh Hua Hai, Kuch Ho Gaya Hai’ or ‘Yeh Ladka Hai Deewana’, ‘Yeh Ladka Hai Allah’, honestly the list can go on and Shah Rukh’s signature step in all of these songs will always be iconic.
He is the pioneer of keeping old school romance alive
He held hands, he wrote letters and he danced in front of the whole world confessing his love. He can easily give modern day dating apps a run for their money. He is the prime example of how chivalry isn’t dead and it never will be. Men today should learn how to love someone through his films.
Every romantic film of Shah Rukh has an iconic dialogue that stays relevant for decades
His dialogues are his greatest strength IMO! He is single handedly responsible for making us weep through his dialogues, which will never go out of style in pop culture. Be it his philosophy on how ‘pyaar dosti hai’, or ‘picture abhi baaki hai’ for that happy ending all of us deserve, or a much needed reminder when he said ‘haso jeeyo muskorao kya pata Kal Ho Naa Ho’. These are life lessons to live by and an entire generation grew up on it. We need a new movie with another dialogue that’s just going to leave all of us stumped yet again.
Honestly, we just need a reason to see him in a black sherwani again
We need a new Shah Rukh Sherwani look asap! Please giive the people what they want!
Happy Birthday to the king of romance, you will forever be our guidebook to love and here's to seeing you in another rom-com soon!
