While the world's eyes are set on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, here's all that happened on Cannes 2022 May 17, day 1!

Cannes Film Festival 2022, one of the most prestigious film festivals around the world is finally here and has kickstarted its journey. This year will mark the 75th year of the film festival being held in Cannes, France, since the time it started. And as we all know that India is a country of honor for Cannes’ Marche’ Du Film this year and Deepika Padukone is one of the jury members of the judge's panel, here are all highlights from the Cannes 2022 May 17, Day 1 of the festival that marks the glory for India as well.

One of the world's greatest film festivals was finally restored after two years of the pandemic that had halted its festivities with the carefully choreographed red-carpet parade leading up the steps to the Grand Théâtre Lumiére on Tuesday.

Deepika Padukone's speech from the Jury Table goes Viral!

Deepika is one of the nine jury members of the Cannes Film Festival this time who will decide on the awards given on the last day during the course of the 10 days. And as the festival kickstarted with the judge's panel introduction, it was Padukone's answer to how will she critique the films that went viral.

She said, "I think cinema is such a powerful tool, such a powerful medium, it has the ability to impact people’s lives and touch and influence people’s lives. So, I think, for the next two weeks, that we have this burden and this responsibility and actually just enjoy the creative process, that's sort of what we are all here to do. I think we are all creative people. I don’t think any of us have the capacity to judge, or to critique, or to criticize.”

Ukrainian president Volofymyr Zelenskyy had a surprise appearance

Through a video link from Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for the cinema world's solidarity with the Ukrainians in the face of the Russian invasion. He spoke about the connection between cinema and reality, referencing films like Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” and Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator”. He received a standing ovation from the entire hall.

R Madhavan, along with Ricky Kej, CBFC member Vani Tripathi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur, CBFC head Prasoon Joshi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Shekhar Kapur represented India at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. 

Rajasthani singer Mame Khan creates history

With his performance, Mame Khan becomes the first folk artist to open Cannes Red Carpet for India for the very first time.

AR Rahman’s directorial debut

The music maestro, AR Rahman is all set to make his directorial debut with his VR film, Le Musk. On Day 1 the audience was seen enjoying his directorial debut project. Which will see a world premiere in Cannes XR, an event for new technologies, and cinematographic content in Marche Du Films.

Michel Hazanavicius’ zombie comedy film Final Cut was screened

The first film to be screened was Michel Hazanavicius's Final Cut which is a zombie comedy film, a French remake of the 2017 Japanese film One Cut of the Dead.

An honorary Palme d’Or to Forest Whitaker

Cannes this year honored Forest Whitaker who received a standing ovation. He won the best actor at Cannes 34 years ago for his performance as Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood’s Bird.
