The Indian version of Riverdale is going to open its doors to us this week and for that The Archies promotions are happening in full swing. Here’s an overview of everything that’s got a dash of retro so far!
Directed by Zoya Akhtar, The Archies is an Indian twist to the beloved American comics. The film stars a fresh new bunch of debutants like Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Agastya Nanda, Vedang Raina, Dot, Mihir Ahuja and Yuvraj Menda. When we mention ‘Archies’ so many things instantly come to our mind. From the retro costumes, the colorful and delicious pop’s diner, rollerblades, Betty’s ponytail, the list just goes on. Archies comics is a classic tale that has been a part of pop culture since the 50s. So to see these characters come to life especially in an Indian avatar is a matter of great pride and representation. These characters have always been a Halloween favorite, everyone loves dressing up like them and recreating their classy yet stylish looks. It’s because so many of us also resonate with these characters as people. Even in your group of friends, you must’ve heard someone say, "you’re such a Betty" or "You’re such a Veronica’" simply because these boy/girl next door characters are just like most of us are in our teenage.
This relatability serves as a great segway for collaborating with brands and having a new take on promotions for the film. We recently saw how an insanely enthusiastic marketing plan can actually help create the hype you desire for a film. Barbie was in collaboration with every brand that you could think of and the color pink was the only thing you could see back in July 2023. The Archies too has taken a similar approach where they have collaborated with brands that resonate a lot with the younger generation and have created their own Archies themed merchandise which brings out that retro and vintage look just like the Riverdale gang! We have mostly seen this kind of promotion in Hollywood in comparison to typical Bollywood movie promotions where it was heavily dependent on interviews and reality TV show appearances. It was refreshing to see a marketing campaign that feels exciting and pulls you into the theme of the film in so many ways!
