Good over evil

There are many movies and TV shows that have adapted the philosophy of ‘good over evil’ that stems from the festival of Dussehra. Here are some iconic ones from pop culture that we loved!

There’s no story without the ‘hero’s journey’ as they say in the cinema world. A hero’s journey is basically divided in three parts; the departure - where the hero leaves his familiar world behind, the initiation - he learns to navigate an unfamiliar world and lastly, the return - when he comes back in a transformed avatar. A lot of movies and TV shows rely on this concept to give us an entertaining story, one where the hero stands up and fights the bad guys.

But what we don’t realize is that a lot of this was already engraved in our culture since eons. Every year on Dussehra, we celebrate the triumph of good over evil when the statue of Raavan is burnt. In the same way, in the fictional world too, we have often seen light making its way through the darkest of times. Simply because good things happen to good people and the bad deeds eventually catch up with the bad ones, and that’s what’s reflected on-screen!

Joffrey’s death scene - Game of Thrones

In the 8 seasons of Game of Thrones, the most satisfying scene has to be when Joffrey died and I think all of us can collectively agree. Joffrey was pure evil from the start till his very end and when he got what he truly deserved is when we all sighed in relief. It restores our faith in the universe!

The ‘Avengers assemble’ scene - Endgame

Probably one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history, I think we all cried, got goosebumps and were left stumped when all the Avengers came together to fight Thanos. It felt like a personal victory, one we’ll never forget!

When Om fights Mukesh - Om Shanti Om

In the first half of the film, you think the worst has happened, the bad guy has won and he has gotten away with the heinous crime he committed in secret. But little did we know the tables would turn for the good! Of course, only and only Shah Rukh Khan can come back to life and fight his enemy, and we’ll all happily believe it! It's a different story that Mukesh totally deserved dying under the jhoomar, the way Shantipriya did!

The plot twist with which Vidya Balan shook us all - Kahaani

Kahaani was a thriller that had us on the edge of our seats till the end and what a climax it was! When Vidya Bagchi takes off her fake belly and shoots Milan Damji, who is responsible for her husband’s death, we all gasped! And it was done around a Durga puja pandal which just added to the dramatic feel! It was a classic example of good over evil!

When Shiva’s love for Isha’s stopped the Brahmastra from ending the world - Brahmastra Part 1

When the three parts of the Brahmastra were joined at the end of the film, the world was supposed to come to an end. But because of the sheer purity in Shiva’s love for Isha, he was able to stop the worst from happening.

When Hamza gets the fate he deserves at the end - Darlings

Hamza physically abused Badrunissa throughout the film and it was rather triggering to watch. When he dies in the end, Badrunissa was freed of his monstrous behavior towards her and she went on to live her life on her own terms.

A sister’s relentless quest to save her brother comes true - Jigra

Jigra is a wrenching tale of a sister fighting the world to avenge her brother. The story highlights the power that an elder sibling has to protect the younger one against all odds and if that isn’t trying to prevail good over evil then I don’t know what is!

When good intention won over greed - Kantara

Sometimes the people who we thought were meant to protect us fail to do so and hence the common man has to take things in his own hands. Such is the story of Kantara where it’s not all black and white but circumstances make Shiva unexpectedly fight his brother to protect the people of his village.

When Simba avenged Mufasa’s death by challenging Scar to get his throne back - The Lion King

The very first example of ‘good over evil’ that we all saw in our childhood is the climax of The Lion King. It’s when Simba takes his place as King and battles Scar to take it back from him. Scar got what he deserved after killing Mufasa and tricking Simba into thinking that he did it.
