Nobody Wants This

I woke up this week and smelled a new rom-com on its way to me and boy am I glad I decided to watch this show! Nobody Wants This is in fact everything we’ve all always wanted to see. Here’s why!

For a show that’s titled ‘Nobody Wants This’ it is literally all everyone can talk about! Rightfully so because it stems from showing how modern day dating works and while it’s all romantic and feel-good, it’s also quite realistic! The ten part series created by Erin Foster revolves around an unlikely relationship between a Rabbi named Noah (Adam Brody) and a girl called Joanne (Kristen Bell) who has a podcast about sex and relationships which she runs along with her sister. The two meet for the first time at a mutual friend’s party and from the first conversation itself sparks are flying everywhere! First things first, Hollywood needs to apologize to Adam Brody for keeping him away from rom-coms for a decade because he is literally what all of us can think about now! As the story progresses, you see the duo fall in love with each other whilst getting to know each other and working through their insecurities. Forget being a green flag, they are an entire green forest to one another and after spending an entire day binging this show, I need a season 2 like RIGHT NOW!

Here’s everything that makes this show worthy of all the praise it's getting on social media!

They’ve cracked the code on what we’ve all been craving to see for a long time - a healthy relationship for once!

We’ve constantly seen rom-coms where the leads have done rather toxic things to one another! Be it stalking, objectifying one another, or the constantly annoying trope of miscommunication, we’ve seen a plethora of these and honestly we were quite done! Nobody Wants This comes as an antidote to all of these movies. It was so refreshing to see the main characters communicate with each other about their deepest fears, support each other’s career paths even though they are poles apart and work through their insecurities together as a team. It’s the constant reassurance and the portrayal of ‘if they wanted to they would’ that makes all of us feel so drawn towards this story. It’s what we all envision our own love life to be like in an ideal world. We all deserve the healthy relationship that they have!

Seth Cohen walked so Noah could run!

This is not the first time Adam Brody has played a green flag on-screen. Seth Cohen was the OG internet boyfriend and now we have Noah who has become the husband we all need! He feels like an extension of his ‘The OC’ character where Seth just grew a beard and became wiser. For decades, we’ve seen male leads who thought being masculine means building a buffed up physique or not showing any emotions. But Noah is a man of today and he opens doors, he gets Joanne flowers, he is honest about his feelings, so honest in fact that it's almost intimidating! He reassures every insecurity of her, he wants her to put her guard down and be on her side no matter what, and of course, more than anything else, he loves her way too much to ever let her go! He's a keeper and we all need a Noah in our lives asap!

Adam Brody and Kristen Bell’s chemistry is off the charts

Honestly, this is a pair we didn’t even know we needed! From the very first time that their characters meet on the show, the sexual tension is so out there, your heart is palpitating for them and you’re constantly wanting them to just kiss already! And my God when they do, your singleness is rubbed so hard in your face! Point being, we need more of this on-screen couple for sure!

Love won over everything, even religion!

This is a couple in the modern world that technically was never supposed to work on paper. He is a Rabbi and she has a podcast about sex; Where in the world would you ever find a pair like this? When against all odds, by shutting down their families’ doubts about them, he takes the biggest leap of faith by leaving his career for her because she does not believe in converting to his religion, it's proof that when you love someone you’d do anything to spend the rest of your life with them! You’d do anything to constantly feel those butterflies when you’re with them and live in that safe space forever.

It caters to the bare minimum of what women have wanted from rom-coms for far too long!

For a genre that seems to be catering to mostly women, it is rarely told from our POV. For the longest time, it’s been about what the guy wants in a girl and if it is ever told from a woman’s point of view, it is often termed as ‘unrealistic’. But Nobody Wants This portrays how Joanne is someone who constantly pushes people away and finds reasons to not date them until she meets Noah, who simply tells her he is going to be on her side and that he can handle her, come what may!

It reignites hope in all of us to find an emotionally intelligent partner

We’ve all had our fair share of dealing with toxic partners - the ones who gaslit us for expressing our feelings, never communicated their feelings and the ones who fell out of love and cheated. We’ve all experienced one heart break at least! But Noah and Joanne showed us what a partner with emotional intelligence can look like and taught us not to settle for the love we think we deserve but in fact settle for the one whose actions match their words. We deserve a partner who is emotionally intelligent enough to understand us in depth and match our wavelength in a way where both emotional and physical chemistry is peaking at its best.

It encourages you to have vulnerable and uncomfortable conversations with your partner

Most of us go back into our shells or put our walls up the minute we step into hot waters with our partners, or when they see a part of our lives that we don’t want to. But Noah and Joanne constantly encourage each other to have uncomfortable conversations when they know there’s something wrong between them or when they know they’re at a crossroads where they have to make a serious decision. The result of that is just them growing even closer each time and it serves as a beautiful reminder to all of us to put our feelings out there with our partners as well.

Kristen Bell’s outfits in the show serve as a lookbook for the perfect hot girl summer

Be it a simple t-shirt and jeans, a gorgeous picnic dress or a pantsuit elevating the boss lady in her, we’re obsessed with Joanne’s closet and we’re stealing these looks STAT!

The soundtrack adds so much essence to the story

I strongly believe that a good soundtrack is a necessary element in a love story, it's what helps create that magic onscreen. Nobody Wants This has the perfect soundtrack playlist with a good mixture of Jewish artists like Haim and Olivia Kaplan to songs by pop stars like Shawn Mendes, Dua Lipa, Rihanna and Olivia Rodrigo. There’s a song catering to every big turn in the story and it’s as if the lyrics were written specifically for them!
