2023 has been the year of cinema and here’s our take on why these blockbusters worked for the audience this year!
After a dry spell of 2 years, the cinemas finally got the glory it craved. It felt like the audience was hungry to explore new and exciting content which looked like promising entertainers right from the beginning. This year has been a treat for Shah Rukh fans as he gave us a streak of blockbusters and each of them was so different from the other. We all missed that quintessential Dharma - Karan Johar movie and with Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani we got a breath of fresh air in terms of storytelling. Every year around Diwali or Eid comes a Salman Khan release and this year was no different with Tiger 3.
Swifties got a hit of nostalgia and adrenaline rush with her Eras Tour concert film being released last month, so her concert reaches maximum number of fans. The Barbenheimer phenomenon had the whole world divided in two teams and the memes for it were through the roof! Not only did people show up in huge numbers to watch both the movies but they also dressed up as the main characters, which brought an excitement factor to the movie watching experience. Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 clashed with Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2. While one movie was about the right kind of sex education, the other was jingoistic to say the least, which makes you wonder how we are going two steps forward and two steps back at the same time. And speaking of backwards, whether we like it or not, yet another Sandeep Reddy Vanga film did fill the cinema halls to watch his stomach churning story.

Let’s have a look at why each of these films had the audience line up for the first day first show and became some of the biggest hits this year!
Pathaan released at the beginning of 2023! We were seeing Shah Rukh Khan on the big screen after 4 years and we terribly missed his larger than life, star-like quality which Pathaan offered. The story totally did not make sense but Shah Rukh made us believe in it all, which is why the year opened with a bang!
Jawan was the South Indianification of Bollywood and we enjoyed it in every way. Shah Rukh Khan played an older version of himself that people couldn’t stop thirsting over. Not to forget, this was his first collaboration with Atlee and that was hype enough for viewers to go!
Whether Bhai puts in any effort in his film or not, whether he is expressionless or being dramatic, one thing is guaranteed - his fans will show up for him. In huge numbers and in some cases….even with crackers!
Nostalgia is a major reason why this film made the kind of box office collection that it did. Jingoism and gore are other two reasons that follow along with it, which are genres that seem to work a lot amongst the viewers these days.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was a refreshing take on so many societal problems that our generation faces today. Be it sexism, cancel culture, or suppressing women who have an opinion, the movie deals with it impactfully while also not being too in the face about it. Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and Karan Johar’s dream team brought the audience to the theaters and gave us two more iconic Dharma characters.
Why or how this film worked is a big question mark in itself! But violence and misogyny has clearly won at the cinemas this year and that’s an alarming fact about what the majority of our society looks forward to in terms of entertainment.
Seeing an overload of pink and Margot Robbie dressed as Barbie which has been an iconic part of many of our childhoods created so much excitement to see what the movie would be all about!
Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy’s collaboration meant a masterclass of cinema for many. From booking the right seats in advance to get the full Imax experience to decoding the film later, Oppenheimer made even early morning shows feel like the prime time evening slots.
Since the first part did so well, the audience was curious to see how the second one offers a good social message infused with comedy this time around as well. Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar’s combination was also one of the biggest selling points of the film.
Taylor Swift: Eras Tour Concert Film
Ever since the Eras Tour began earlier this year, Taylor Swift has majorly taken over our feeds and many of her hit songs resurfaced on our playlists as well. We got major fomo when we saw swifties screaming their lungs out to their favorite songs in a huge arena and wished we were there too! But everyone knows how expensive the concert tickets are. So here’s when The Eras Tour became a middle ground for countries like India, where it reached fans from every corner of the world and they too could have a concert-like experience along with other die hard swifties. The theater was filled with swifties dressed according to the era they resonated with the most and the whole cinema singing songs in sync.
We started the year with a Shah Rukh Khan film and we’re ending it with him as well! After two successful action films, everyone’s geared up to see him on this emotional ride in a typical Rajkumar Hirani film.
