The Barbie trailer starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has aesthetically pleasing visuals in every frame and hilarious banters between all the Barbies and Kens!
We’ve all played with or heard of Barbie and Ken dolls as kids. We'd make up our own stories while playing because the world of Barbie was always so fascinating to us as toddlers. Little did we know that the Barbie world would get a larger than life big picture adaptation by Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig. Movie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling playing the titular role of Barbie and Ken respectively. The Barbie trailer starts with Margot entering in her fluffy pink heels taking us to her plastic and of course everything pink universe where all the girls are called Barbie and all the boys are called Ken. It looks like only positivity and innocence resides in their world and there’s no place for malicious emotions. Even in a scene where Ken tells her that they should spend the night together because they are ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’ (which reminds one of innocent childlike romance from our school days) she asks ‘Why?’ and he replies after a pause saying ‘even I’m not so sure’, meaning the two are naive enough to not know what boyfriends and girlfriends do when they stay over at each other’s house in the real world.

We’ve seen different versions of Barbie dolls that resonate with different ethnicities and people of colour. In the same way, in the movie as well, those different iterations are also very well represented, hence why everyone has the same name! So when Asian Ken, played by Simu Liu, wants a ‘beach off’ with Caucasian white Ken, Ryan Gosling, it's a rather PG-13 version of it which only makes you laugh! In the one minute 50 second trailer, without revealing much of the story, it looks like Barbie is on a journey to go away from her world to the real world in her cute convertible car (which is also pink if you didn’t get the memo yet). She is shocked to see Ken on the back seat tagging along with her but not without his rollerblades cause he literally does not go anywhere without them!
Ever since the trailer dropped, social media has been going crazy over the color palette and visuals of the movie, to the point where they also made some other fan posters of some of their favorite celebrities. Greta Gerwig has previously directed phenomenal women centric stories like Lady Bird and Little Women so only time will tell what she has up her sleeve for Barbie’s self reflecting journey to the real world. The movie is set to release on July 21 on the big screens and also features Dua Lipa as a mermaid Barbie. The cast also includes, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya and Jamie Demetriou.
