Anek

Anubhav Sinha's Anek starring Ayushmann Khurrana released its trailer and it raises a very important issue of Northeast India and asks a question that's very prevalent these days; who is an Indian?

India is a secular country that's proud of its diverse culture that celebrates everyone. But these days questions are being put up about people's nationality which in turn makes you ask - who is an Indian and what does it take to be just Indian? Taking the issues of Northeast India and its people who often deal with the discrimination and othering, Anek is a film that stars Ayushmann Khurrana as an undercover cop, who tries to figure out a way to maintain peace in the region while uncovering the harsher dark realities in which the citizens actually live.

According to the trailer, the film seems to be an action-packed thriller that unpacks the tension that goes on between the government and 30-40 separatist groups that exist in Northeast India. After one separatist group, Johnson becomes more active than before. In an attempt of trying to subdue the group and maintain peace, Ayushmann Khurrana starts discovering the problems that the common folks still face to date and brings them forth to light to his authorities who outrightly reject them. This and many instances of discrimination force Khurrana's characters toward blurring the man-made regional divisions and make only one thing win in this unnecessary war and that's India.

In one of the scenes, Ayushmann goes into a debate-discussion with a man about how one can decide who is North Indian, South Indian, East Indian, and West Indian. He goes on to ask the most basic thing of all - ‘Sirf Indian kaise hota hai aadmi?‘ Written and directed by highly critically acclaimed and proclaimed director of Thappad, Article 15, and Mulk, Anubhav Sinha's Anek is all set to release in theatres on May 7, 2022. It also stars Manoj Pahwa, Deeplina Deka, Kumud Mishra, and more alongside Khurrana.
