Ratna Pathak is immensely talented and these roles played by her have a special place in our hearts.
Ratna Pathak Shah has proven time and again that she is one of the best actors in the Indian film industry. From being a cool but concerned single mom to a snooty South Bombay socialite, there is no character that we can't imagine her taking on with perfection. Her characters are relatable and believable making her performances all the more impactful. It is sad that we don't get to witness more of her in movies and shows, it truly is the film industry's loss. While we want to watch more of her in the movies, the roles she has already played have a special place in our hearts.
So, here's taking a look at some of the best characters played by Ratna Pathak:
- Buaji from Lipstick under my Burkha
What a movie and what a character! You have to hand it to Ratna Pathak for delivering perhaps one of the boldest roles of her life in Lipstick under my Burkha. From someone who suppresses her desires to becoming someone who isn't afraid to explore the yearning that exists deep within, her character keeps you hooked. More than anything, this film and Buaji's character spoke volumes about the freedom a woman desires and holds back until she can't. Her performance itself is proof that no one could have played Buaji's role better!
2. Savitri from Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na
This movie made Ratna Pathak our favourite cool on-screen mom! From her love for Jay to her fight against the wrongdoings of a crook cop to her banter with her dead husband, every scene shows the different sides of her character and she pull-off all of them quite seamlessly.

3. Sunita Kapoor from Kapoor and Sons
Oh, what a roller coaster of a life, Sunita Kapoor played by Ratna Pathak goes through in this film. You relate to her, feel her angst, her disappointments and her internal battle to come to terms with the hand she's dealt. There are some light-hearted moments in the movie where you see her smile and let her guard down and she manages to touch your heart with all the range of emotions she displays throughout the movie.
4. Dr. Diwan from Nil Battey Sannata
Even though it isn't a meaty role, Ratna Pathak wins you over as the kind-hearted employer of Chanda played by Swara Bhasker in the film. With this role, the experienced actor proves it doesn't take 2 hours of screentime to display one's outstanding talent.
5. Maya Sarabhai from Sarabhai vs Sarabhai
And of course, we had to mention Maya Sarabhai because it would have been categorically middle class of us not to! If you've watched even a single episode of the show, you now how fabulously she plays the snooty character without once making it look annoying. And if you haven't watched the show, kya kar rahe ho yaar?! Go Watch now!
