#KetchupTalks: Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar share their experience of working on Gullak Season 2

Over the past few years, a number of Hindi content has been gracing the internet. People are getting to witness quality shows and series on their favourite OTT platforms. Among all the stories around drugs and violence, there are some feel-good stories that have won hearts all over the internet. TVF and SonyLiv's Gullak is one of them.

A story revolving around the struggles and sincere dynamics of a middle-class family, Gullak reached out to the people in the most humble way. The show was well-appreciated and loved by the audience. The relatable characters, story-line, and funny dialogues gave the family show a lot more depth. It's the popularity and critical acclaim garnered by Season one that has led to the release of the second season of the show. Directed by Palash Vaswani and written by Durgesh Singh the show has an amazing cast of Geetanjali Kulkarni, Jameel Khan, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, and Harsh Mayar.

We spoke to the onscreen brother-duo, Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar aka Annu and Aman as they shared their experience of working on Gullak Season 2 and more!

Here's how the conversation went:

What was the most memorable reaction that you received from fans after the 1st season?

Vaibhav Raj Gupta: "That people started calling me Annu like wherever I go OR on Instagram or Facebook, they always mention "Aapko nahi pata?" like randomly. Toh vo bohot pyara reaction hai. As an actor, you want people to know what you perform onscreen."

Harsh Mayar: "Yaar unko sabko bohot pasand aaya aur abhi second season ka besabri se intezaar kar rahe hai. Mera ek moment ye tha jab main kisi ke ghar mei ek baar gaya tha aur unko nahi pata tha ki mei ek TV actor hu, vo already sab Gullak baithke dekh rahe the. Mein bhi baith gaya dekhne ke liye, aur mera dost mujhe dekhke has raha tha. Maine usko ye bola ke bhai inko batana mat toh aadhe ghante baad unhone bataya jab khatam hogaya toh unko register karne mei hi bohot samay lag gaya. Unhe vishwas hi nahi ho raha tha. Toh ye ek experience mujhe bohot acha laga tha."

If you can summarise this season what would you say?

Harsh: "Mene toh dekh liya, lekin ab public bataegi, aap log bataoge ki aapko personally kaisa laga, but I'm sure ki logo ko pasand aayega kyuki aisi kahaaniyaan, aisi cheezein bani nahi hai aur ye uss zamane mei banti thi jab bawarchi ya door darshan pe pyaare pyaare Malgudi days ya Kacchi dhoop jese shows aate the. And people used to love watching that. Ab waisa kuch bahar aa raha hai and I'm sure ki log dekhenge and unko pasand aayega."

Vaibhav: "Season 2 bohot alag alag emotions le ayega. Bohot alag alag baatein hum leke ayenge but aaram se not with drama but bohot pyaara likha hai. Poore team ne bahut acche se kiya hai."

Palash Vaswani is the director of this season. How was your experience of working with him?

Vaibhav: "Amazing. He is a very good Director. He knows the duniya of gullak. Palash had a responsibility but usne bohot pyaar se direct kiya bohot mehnat ki. The way it is written everybody wanted to put 100 per cent."

Harsh: "1st season mein Amrit Raj Gupta Director the and ab dusre season mein Palash Director hain. Pehle toh mujhe thoda dar tha ki pura crew naya hai bas actor purane hain. But sabse logo se mil ke, Palash bhai se milke, itna maza aaya. They made us beleive that we'll take this season even further. And it really happened. Inn logone sahi mein karke dikhaya aur bohot hi sundar visually bhi banaya pure show ko. Bohot hi ache log hai aur bohot maza aaya sabke saath kaam karke. Bilkul bhai jese humne kaam kiya."

Can you tell us more about your character in this season?

Harsh: "Aman hai Annu ka chhota bhai, uske baare mei kya batau?! Main chahta hoon ki aap dekho. Jo bhi hai, aapko acha lagega, funny lagega ya jaisa bhi lagega wo aap dekh ke batana. I don't want to tell to much because uska vo maza kharab ho jaega."

Vaibhav: "Aap vulnerability dekh paooge. Alag graph hai, uski personal life dikhayi hai. For me it was one of my favorite characters to play. Main bohot lucky hoon because har actor chahega aisa layered role karna."

What was your experience of working with the cast?

Vaibhav: "They are like family to me more than co-stars. I call them papa-mummy. We share the same emotions and we come from the same background. Hum khana bhi ek sath khate hain. Isiiliye aapko ek pyaari family dikhti hai. Humara background same hai isiliye humein pata hai kaise kaam karna hai. Hum bahut support karte hai ek doosre ko."

Harsh: "Mujhe toh bohot acha hi lagta hai, meri family jesi hi hai ye log saare. Vaibhav bhai, Geetanjali ji in sab logo ke saath kaam karne vali feeling hi nahi aati hai, aisa lagta hai family ke saath hi kaam kar rahe hai. Shooting pe aaye hai aur mazze kar rahe hai aur maze maze mein ghar ja rahe hai."

If you could choose another character from the show, who would you choose and why?

Vaibhav: "Nahi nahi. I will choose my own character. Kyunki there is so much to do uski khudki world hai plus uska bahar ka world hai. Bohot worlds hain uske jisme rehna chahta hai."

Harsh: "Same. Aman ka hi karunga kyuki vo mujhe aisa bolte hai log ki bada difficult hai karna. Toh koi aur bechara usko kharab kare toh main hi theek rahunga. But u know, Vaibhav bhai ka apna ek charm hai unka role karne ka, so I don't think I could match that charm."

What is the best thing about working in web series and how has OTT changed the whole entertainment industry?

Harsh: "Acha hi hai, kaafi saare naye logo ko isme chance mil raha hai jo bechare cinema mein nahi jaa paa rahe ya unke paas utni pohoch nahi hai. Wo log apna saara kaam OTT pe dikha paa rahe hai aur unlogo ko saraya jaa raha hai kyuki OTT ki itni reach ho gayi hai. Logon ne dekhna chalu kar diya hai toh ye bohot achi baat hai. Mujhe bhi thoda hi samay hua hai OTT se jude aur mujhe maza hi aa raha hai."

Vaibhav: "In many ways we get to know the characters inside out. Because there are workshops and you create backstories for your characters and you play a character for 3 months. It is a process and you know the character in and out. As an actor,you can show your range. And the show is seen by the whole country and even abroad. So reach zyaada hai and it is amazing for everyone - the actors, directors and writers. 5 saal pehle yeh nahi tha. Kitne acche acche actors aaye hai OTT k wajah se."

Any message you'd like to give the viewers?

Vaibhav: "Yaar main yehi bolna chahoonga ki... not because it's my show but aisi writing, aisa show as an audience aapko nahi dekhne milega. So, main chahta hoon aap yeh show dekhe aur humein zaroorat hai aapke support ki kyunki agar audience nahi dekhegi toh kitna bhi achha kaam karoge kuch fayda nahi. Iisliye aap dekho bahut pyaara show hai . Agar naye actors ko acknowledgement milegi toh usse zyada kya chhaiye. Yeh ek family show hai aap family ke saath dekho aur sabko dikhao."

Harsh: "Main saare fans ko yehi kehna chahunga ki aap Season 2 dekhiye, aapko bohot acha lagega, bohot mazaa aayega, aap sabke saath baithke dekhiye, sabko dikhaye aur maze lijiye bass."
